MEDIA
WELCOME
I welcome this opportunity to write an introductory message to the Scotland team media guide for the IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand. Media covering this seventh such global tournament know better
than me how the tools of their trade have evolved since the tournament was last in New Zealand in 1987. Then it seemed the fax machine was cutting edge technology… The scale of the Rugby World Cup, whether your role is written
press, broadcast or online, continues to grow and while that can lead to challenges, I think we have to embrace them. You’ll see the line often reported that Rugby World Cup is the “world’s third biggest sporting event.” What does that mean? To me it means that our sport has a fantastic opportunity. There are many counter attractions for people either to participate in leisure and recreation or to spend their leisure pound. But for all of us, wouldn’t it be great if the sport of choice is rugby. Rugby World Cup can lift our sport to a new audience and help more people to catch the rugby bug.
I believe rugby is the greatest team game
in the world. One of the key values of the Scotland squad is to inspire the nation through winning performances and what better stage to bring that value to life than the Rugby World Cup. Many column inches and much airtime have been devoted to the
build-up to the Rugby World Cup, whether in southern or northern hemisphere and I suspect that we are now all ready to get on with the business of playing. On behalf of the Scotland team, management and support staff, I look
forward to working with you over the ensuing weeks and wish you a successful Rugby World Cup tournament.
