JOHN

BARCLAY

John Adam Barclay first made his mark when he helped his Dollar Academy team to an impressive 27-14 win over High School of Dundee in the Bell Lawrie Scottish Schools Cup final at Murrayfield in 2004. Accolades followed, including the Macphail Rugby Scholarship and in summer 2004 he signed an apprentice contract with Glasgow Warriors. In October 2004, less than a month after his 18th birthday, he was included in the extended squad for Scotland’s autumn Tests. John played in the back row for Scotland under-18 in

the 2004 Four Home Unions tournament and he appeared in all Scotland’s matches in the 2005 IRB under-19 World Championship, captaining the team against England and scoring the vital try in the win over Romania. His under-21 debut came against France in February 2006 and he continued to play in all five matches in that world championship, scoring a try against Georgia. Later that year he made his Scotland A debut off the bench against Australia A, followed by a replacement appearance in February 2007 when Scotland A beat Italy A. He went on to play in all Scotland A’s games in the 2007 Churchill Cup. John was included in Scotland’s 2007 World Cup squad

and gained his first cap against New Zealand, the day before his 21st birthday. His Six Nations debut followed in the opening match of the 2008 tournament against France; he continued in the team for the game against Wales and was part of the victorious side in the second Test of Scotland’s 2008 summer tour to Argentina. He played in all three 2008 Bank of Scotland Corporate

Autumn Tests, scoring his first international try in the 41-0 victory over Canada, and six internationals in 2009; his second try came against Wales in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations game in Cardiff. He was named man of the match for his dynamic performance in Scotland’s 13-9 victory over Argentina in Mar Del Plata that summer and replicated the accolade five months later for his outstanding contribution to Scotland’s victory over South Africa in the second EMC Autumn Test.
