NATHAN HINES

Nathan John Hines played rugby league before switching to the union code and winning New South Wales under-21 honours. Joining Gala in 1998, he helped the club to the Premier Division 2 title and Scottish Cup in 1998/99. He subsequently played for Edinburgh and then Perpignan before moving to Leinster in 2009. Nathan – who qualifies for Scotland through a grandfather

from Govan – joined the full Scotland side on the 2000 summer tour to New Zealand, making his Test debut. During his first season in professional rugby he also represented Scotland sevens. Sidelined by injury in October 2000, he returned the following season to score for the Scotland Development XV against Tonga. In 2002 he captained Scotland A in the draw with England, played a huge role in their win over Italy A and led them against Wales A. He played in both Tests on Scotland’s North America tour, scoring his first try for Scotland in the victory against USA. His first Six Nations start came at Twickenham in 2003 and his performance in Scotland’s narrow loss to South Africa on the first Test of the 2003 summer tour won him man of the match. After a storming start against Fiji in the 2003 World Cup, he secured a place in Scotland’s final match against Australia. Following six international starts in 2006 Nathan missed

the Autumn Test against Australia and the 2007 Calcutta Cup though returned against Wales, Italy and Ireland. Later that year he played in four of Scotland’s matches in his second RWC and became the 23rd player to make 50 Scotland appearances when he lined up against Wales in February 2008. In the second Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Test, later that year, he scored his second international try, against South Africa. Injury kept him out of the Six Nations squad in 2009 until he returned as a replacement against Ireland, prior to selection into the British and Irish Lions squad. He went on to take part in the November victory over Australia, to play in three of five Six Nations fixtures and all the EMC Autumn Tests in 2010 and throughout the 2011 RBS 6 Nations.
