MIKE BLAIR
Michael Robert Leighton Blair represented Scottish Schools and Scotland at under-19 and under-21. At the 2001 IRB Sevens in London he was the tournament’s top try-scorer and he continued for the Scotland sevens at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002. Five appearances for Scotland A included a try-scoring replacement appearance in the 13-19 defeat by France A in March 2002. After scoring a 60-metre try in the non-cap match against
the Barbarians at Murrayfield, he marked his Scotland debut with a try against Canada on the 2002 North American tour. Mike’s second Scotland try was against Italy in the Rugby World Cup Countdown Test in 2003, followed by his World Cup debut against the USA in Brisbane. His third try came in the 38-3 win against Samoa in June 2004 and five months later he went over the line in the 100-8 win against Japan. An outstanding performance in Scotland’s victory over
France in the 2006 RBS 6 Nations was followed by an impressive appearance in the 18-12 defeat of England. Injury caused him to miss the 2007 RBS 6 Nations but he returned for the August Test victory over Ireland. He played in four 2007 RWC matches and became Scotland’s 108th captain when he took over from the injured Jason White for the 2008 Six Nations match against Ireland. He won man-of-the-match in the next fixture, the Calcutta Cup victory at Murrayfield and a week later in Italy he scored his fifth
international try. He captained Scotland for the two-Test tour in Argentina in June 2008; in the second Test he became the 25th player to make 50 appearances for Scotland. His captain’s role continued throughout the 2008 Bank of Scotland Corporate Test series and the 2009 RBS 6 Nations after which he was called into the British & Irish Lions squad for the summer tour of South Africa. Mike is now Scotland’s most-capped scrum-half, overtaking
Bryan Redpath, during the 2010 RBS 6 Nations Championship. His sixth international try, an instinctively opportunistic score, came against Italy in the second EMC Test in August 2011.
