In 1999, I took my first administrative leadership class. I quickly learned that the life of an admin- istrator is a demand- ing profession, but it is quite a rewarding career. Since that first administrative
class, I have had a great respect for anyone engaged in school administration. Today’s administrators are often stuck between the demands of parents, school boards, teach- ers; they lack many resources and funding and are required to follow educational legislation that at times can be education- ally challenging.
I have been fortunate to have my share of quality administrators. All good ad- ministrators understand the value of a balanced education but they needed the tools, resources and data to support music as part of a comprehensive education. Administrators need to know that for today’s students to succeed tomorrow,
they must have a comprehensive educa- tion that includes music taught by exem- plary music educators. So what is today’s administrator suppose to do given the challenges of their position?

Connect With Music Teachers Get to know your music staff. Learn to understand what music teachers really do in and outside of the classroom, how they do it and why. Music teachers are a special breed of teachers and have all been touched by music and in many cases, a former music teacher. Surprise your music teacher and ask them what inspired them to become a music teacher.
Gather Data and Research Facts Go to
www.wmeamusic.org. There you will find a new advocacy link sup- ported by Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education (WAME). On the web site, you will find a special pull down tab
specifically for administrators with the latest data and research facts to support music education.
Provide Opportunities for Professional Development Administrators should support and encour- age their music staff to become members of MENC/WMEA and get involved and engaged in the organizations’ professional outreach. Take advantage of active and engaging professional organizations. There is a wealth of professional devel- opment resources, materials, conferences and workshops for all music teachers. In Wisconsin, we are fortunate to have the Wisconsin Center for Music Educa- tion. Consider supporting and sending your staff to this state of the art facility to check out its numerous resources or workshops.
Now let’s turn the tables. We know that administrators are extremely busy having to deal with all kinds of issues even at a moment’s notice. So what can music edu- cators do to help administrators?
