WMEA News Leyla Sanyer, President-Elect
Highlights From the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Conference WMEA past presidents were honored this year while celebrating the organization’s 50th
Singapore Music Teachers Visit anniversary during the Wisconsin
State Music Conference. WMEA’s first two state presidents, Fred Leist (1960- 1961) and Eva Mae Struckmeyer (1961- 1963), were joined by many other past leaders for a special Capitol Sing. They were also recognized at the general session before the keynote speaker, MENC Presi- dent Scott Shuler. Included in the over 80 wonderful sessions offered by state teach- ers and guests were presentations on ad- vocacy, technology, music selection, 21st century skills and classroom strategies. Dr. Bennett Reimer was also a notable guest. Performances came from vocal quintet Five by Design with Richie Cole, as well as school and college concerts represented by UW-Eau Claire, Appleton North, Lance Middle School, Oconomowoc, Menomonee Falls and Carthage, among others. WSMA sponsored the Exemplary Soloist Recital as well as the traditional WSMA State Honors Music Project concerts. Sessions were well attended, exhibitors were pleased with the turnout at their booths and organizers are still sorting through the feedback, which will help look to the future beginning with the 2011 conference. Many teachers attended the January 8 planning session at the Wis- consin Center for Music Education.
Four music teachers from Singapore made the 2010 Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence and the Wisconsin Center for Music Education their first stop on a whirlwind tour of the U.S. After travels to New York and Boston, they wrote to tell us that they had found what they were looking for in Wisconsin. In an effort to set up a really comprehensive, collaborative plan for music education in Singapore they found that Wisconsin’s organizational model, which pulls leadership from all areas of music education to a central location and focus, most impressed them. They at- tended conference sessions, including the keynote and honors concerts. They also visited with Waunakee village leaders and the news media. It is clear that the Wis- consin Center for Music Education and the direction of WMEA/WSMA in Wis- consin, under the leadership of Executive Director Michael George, are encouraging the world to sit up and take notice!

CMENC Collegiate Conference
Under the leadership of President Abigail Pulvermacher (UWW), CMENC complet- ed a successful collegiate conference on Saturday, October 30 at Waunakee High School. After the state conference, over 40 college students and five presenters met to discuss issues that will affect
beginning teachers in the coming years. Many positive responses were received regarding the date, time and place. College sponsors and advisors are encouraged to keep an eye out for plans for next fall and the 2011 edition of this wonderful new tradition.
50th Anniversary Campaign
In an effort to make sure that the only music education facility of its kind in the nation is sustained and completed, Wisconsin Foundation for School Music is continuing a campaign to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of WMEA. The WMEA
Board is promising up to $50,000 of the total $500,000 needed. A donation of approximately $25 a month over four years will complete a suggested pledge of $1,250. Each individual and/or group that can promise this kind of help will really be sending a message that we care about music education for our students and professional development for each other. Any amount that each of us can pledge will help in the renewed effort to celebrate this anniversary. We know that many teachers have already commit- ted significant resources toward earlier fundraising, but the work is not finished. Consider a pledge today to support the wonderful work that is happening every day at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education in Waunakee!

By mak- ing the front page more user friendly and keeping up with the most current research and support information, this web site will help teachers, students, parents and school officials to advocate for music education in every district. Teachers can go in and find the most current and specific help for their situation. Visit the WAME web pages by going to
www.wmeamusic.org and click- ing the “Advocacy” button!
