Combine this traditional efficient model with the addition of courses that serve beginner populations or a demand for evolving trends and you have the poten- tial to reduce class size in core content areas even further. Utilize your strength in music and arts education as the focus for integrating Social Studies, Science, Math and English and you create a model that reaches new levels of engagement, achievement and efficiency – something that seemed impossible just a few short years ago. While some may see music and the arts as practical places to exercise budget reductions, I contend they should be the last place schools should look.

David Hay has served as principal of Kettle Moraine High School since 2008. His career also began at KMHS where he first taught business and marketing before stepping into administration in 2005. Hay’s perspective is perhaps shaped most by his close connection to the student experience. Hay led a feasibil- ity study in the district that resulted in the formation of a charter school focused in provid- ing students with blended and online learning opportunities. He also worked closely with staff on the feasibility study that led to the pilot of the Fine Arts Academy model. Hay currently coordinates grades 6-12 research & develop- ment efforts for the district.
