wsma/dpi student composition project
Student Composers Honored Andrea Mauch, Director of Development
“To write great music, the musician must make his life a great song.”
– J.S. Bach
For the past 22 years, the WSMA/DPI Stu- dent Composition Project has encouraged and recognized the efforts of Wisconsin’s students at musical composition. This year a total of 54 entries were received for the project – 42 for the High School Division (grades 9-12) and 12 for the Middle School Division (grades 5-8). Of these, 18 were recognized with Honorable Mention, and 20 earned awards based on their merit. The awards were presented at the Wisconsin State Capitol in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Music Confer- ence on October 28. Following the awards ceremony, students were recognized at the Capitol Sing event in the rotunda. Deborah Mahaffey presented the awards on behalf of DPI, and Mike George as- sisted on behalf of WSMA. Nick Connors, vocal solo award winner, performed his composition.
