Ms. Struckmeyer’s closing statement en- courages teachers to evaluate their respon- sibility to music education and of making ”familiar things beautiful and beautiful things familiar.” Recently, a friend and I came to a common conclusion. One needs to get to a certain age to appreciate all that was accomplished by one’s predecessors. Eva Mae has sound advice for past, present

and future educators. Working together performing, creating and listening to musi- cal works of art will promote brotherhood from sea to shining sea. “Music for every child. Every child for music.”

president-elect. The next year, in her “Message from the President” of October 1961, she communicated her passion as she wrote:

The age in which we live appears to be one of where “outer space” seems to be in conflict with “inner space.” Those of us with sincere loyalties to the arts must be willing to acknowledge the importance of outer space influences, but we must also be in a professional position for reflecting an equiponderant (evenly balanced) attitude toward the arts. It is good to hear President Kennedy say, “The American government is even more dependent on art. For art works direct; it speaks a language without words and it is thus a chief means of proclaiming America’s message to the world over the heads of dictators and beyond the reaches of officialdom.”

As music educators we must possess the zeal and passionate devotion, which a sound philosophy of music provides. The challenges, which we face in our everyday dealings with students, parents and administrators, can be met most efficiently and effectively if we regard our duties with ever-increasing professionalism.
