2010 WSMA State Marching Band

Championships Results October 16, 2010 • UW-Whitewater Perkins Stadium Tim Wurgler, WSMA Program Director

Congratulations to all bands that participated in the 26th annual

WSMA State Marching Band Championships. This one-day event brings families and communities together to support the musicianship, art, dedication and creativity of participating stu- dents, directors and schools in the culminating performance of the Wisconsin marching activity.

For most participating bands, October 16 was the final march- ing band performance of the season. Marching bands statewide spent hundreds of hours practicing and refining their musical and marching skills in preparation for their performance. While numerical scores identified winners, the WSMA State Marching Band Championships celebrate the accomplishments of every band, student, teacher, staff and support staff that participated in this exciting event.

The day of the championships brought much excitement and anticipation to the crowd of spectators that had assembled. The morning started with the Novice Class. This class is for bands that are participating in the championships for the first time. In the competitive classes 28 bands assembled to perform for a team of eight marching band experts adjudicating the areas of perfor- mance, general effect, percussion and auxiliary. Their individual scores are combined into an overall score. Award divisions for the competitive classes are based on pre-determined scores assigned to each class. Congratulations to all of the participating bands.

This activity would not be possible without many volunteers. WSMA wishes to thank all of the people who helped to make this event a success. Special thanks to Glenn Hayes (UW-Whitewater director of bands) and the many UW-Whitewater students, faculty, staff and security officers who worked all day long making sure that the event ran smoothly.

Perkins Stadium was filled with artistry, excitement and the spirit of good sportsmanship as students, fans and staff cheered favorites and competitors alike throughout the day. UW-Whitewater War- hawk Marching Band presented guest exhibition performances throughout the day. Class A and Class AAA champions were also asked to perform in exhibition during the Class AA and Class AAAA segment of the championships.
