honolulu — If President Obama asked Santa for a more low-key ChristmasDay this year, he got his wish. Twelve months ago, a man
was accused of attempting to detonate explosives in his un- derwear on a flight bound for Detroit, leaving Obama to spend Christmas Day on the phone with advisers, scrambling to deal with the fallout and ensure that U.S. planes were safe. But this time around, Obama

relaxed at his family’s beach- front rental house in Hawaii, watching NBA games on televi- sion. He and first lady Michelle Obama emerged late in the after- noon to visit U.S. troops having Christmas dinner at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, a few miles fromthe Obama vacation home. It was the third day of the
president’s Hawaii trip, which will last till Jan. 2. He spent the first two days playing golf and taking his daughters to the beach. The visit with troops was not
officially announced, but it was widely anticipated here, given that Obama had stopped by the base and offered Christmas greetings to troops as president- elect in 2008 and in 2009. Also Saturday, Obama issued
a statement condemning a sui- cide bombing in Pakistan that killed dozens of people. For Obama, this Christmas
was a marked contrast to last Christmas. He did not speak publicly about the alleged bomb plot that day but was on a conference call with advisers and read written briefings. This year, the Obamas opened
gifts and celebrated the holiday with several families that tradi- tionally have vacationed here with the first family. The presi- dent also was joined by sister Maya Soetero-Ng and her hus- band and children, who live in Honolulu. Obama skipped his usual
morning trip to the gym, after exercising the first two days of his vacation. Instead, the avid hoops fan had the chance to watch his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls, play theNewYork Knicks and to see the Los Ange- les Lakers play the Miami Heat, whose progress the president has followed closely since the team signed all-star player LeB- ron James over the summer. The Bulls lost, but the Heat
won.
