Excerpts from online comments about the Dec. 5 package “Being 10 in 2010”: MasonPatriot1: Thank you for giving me some faith that there is still that magical innocence of childhood, WaPo. In the eternal words and wisdom of Calvin and Hobbes, “Childhood is for ruining adulthood.” I sure wish I was 10 again. jeff20: “But what about 10-year-olds growing up now? Wars rage, terrorism lurks, the planet is warming, jobs are vanishing, poverty is growing, there are more children diagnosed with disabilities. …” The myth of the good old days.

Wars? Vietnam was every bit the quagmire today’s wars are, World War I and II were much worse, and for us, the Civil War was far worse. Global warming? In the ’70s scientists predicted global cooling. Terrorism? That was over nine years ago. Poverty

and jobs? Unemployment was at 25 percent during the Great Depression nationwide, and much worse in the Dust Bowl states. Decadent pop culture? How about the hippies and the punks, Studio 54, etc.? Today there is HIV,

but what about polio and smallpox? And consider this: One hundred

and fifty years ago, it was legal to own people in this country. Life hasn’t gotten any worse. When

we get older, we just choose what we want to remember. midas20874: It is really very refreshing to know how these two 10-year olds [Monnik Williams and LaDaysha Lucas] have bonded together and strive to resist all those amoral

happenings out there. If only the politicians

controlling the affairs of this great nation can learn from these two beautiful young girls, we will be heading forward in the right direction instead of regressing backward. Jsuf: The only reason that life could be tougher for a child now is because of the breakdown of

the American family. Divorce rates are well over 50 percent now and getting worse. These children have no guidance. If people aren’t going to be responsible enough to raise their children correctly, then they need to keep their pants on.
