Caroline Maessen is the director of Attractiepark Toverland in The Netherlands. Boasting both indoor and outdoor areas, the park was opened in 2001 and has developed into a major theme park attraction, offering a high quality experience aimed at the family market. Continued investment has seen the regular introduction of new rides, attractions and facilities, with further major additions planned for the venue’s 10th. anniversary year in 2011. Here, InterPark Editor Andrew Mellor talks to Maessen about the park and other aspects of the industry.
IP: When did you get involved in the theme park/ attractions industry and how?

CM: In 1996. My brother Jean asked me to develop the concept for Toverland. It was a big wish of his to design a theme park. He always wanted to do that together with me.
IP: When did Toverland open and what were its main attractions at that time? CM: We opened on May 19, 2001, and our main attractions were a junior coaster, a waterslide, a wave swinger and tea cups.
IP: What do you feel have been the most significant changes and developments in the theme park industry in the past five years? CM: The biggest change is that not only are extremely high demands posed on the quality and originality of
