IP: In what ways has the technology used in animatronics changed over recent years? How have these advances been beneficial to the theme parks/ attractions industry? BB: The basic technologies of animatronics are very similar to their brethren of the early 1960s. Improved actuators give smoother, better controlled motion, and state-of-the- art control systems are able to balance dozens of points of articulation seamlessly in order to give truly life-like performances. Major leaps in computer technology have also allowed for the interactivity and randomisation of modern animatronics with real-time responses controlling complex figures so that the illusion of life is nearly perfect. Now, instead of the entirely passive experience of viewing animatronics from afar in a show scene, guests are encouraged to have a customised experience with them up close and in that way to become part of the show themselves.
IP: Have technological advances resulted in more operators being able to install animatronic features due to reduced manufacturing costs being filtered down, or has the search for new, innovative animatronic solutions simply served to increase costs and keep such installations out of smaller operators’ reach?
