A milestone year forWWA The World Waterpark Association celebrates its 30th

This year’s WWA Symposium & Trade Show will celebrate the association’s 30th anniversary year

AS the latest membership ad campaign states: “An association is only as strong as the people behind it,” which is why the World Waterpark Association (WWA) focuses much of its resources on providing the programmes and services that educate, motivate and inspire both WWA members and the industry as a whole. This year, the WWA turns 30, a milestone which will be celebrated at the upcoming 30th

Anniversary Symposium &

Trade Show, due to be held from October 6 to 10, in San Antonio, Texas. Throughout its 30 years, the WWA has continued to grow and innovate the depth of its services and has remained committed to working with its membership to strategically position the waterpark industry as a family- friendly option for leisure recreation. One of the association’s strengths is its commitment to

being both the #1 educational choice for waterpark owners, operators and developers and a go-to resource for water safety programming and initiatives. Here are just a few examples of the unique, innovative

programmes the WWA offers: ■ The Annual Symposium & Trade Show. Not only is the

WWA’s annual show the most comprehensive waterpark- specific educational programme on the planet, but it is the most concentrated gathering of waterpark professionals on both the park and supplier sides of the industry. This once-a- year event allows waterpark professionals to come together and connect with each other in the ways that matter most - this is truly the waterpark industry’s marketplace for ideas, inspiration and advice. (To learn more about the 30th

Anniversary Symposium & Trade Show, visit www.

waterparks.org/convention). ■ WWA’s Webinar Wednesday’s programme. New for

2010, this bi-monthly programme is currently offered free of charge to WWA members, as well as non-members. With the help of the WWA Technology Committee, this programme was created to give operators more opportunities for education and professional development without any additional revenue outlay. Topics this year have included human resources, marketing, social media, guest

year of serving the water leisure industry

relations, in-service training, recreational water illnesses and much more. Recordings to prior sessions are available for download at www.waterparks.org/education. ■ The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Event. The event

was started and organised by the WWA as a culminating event for National Water Safety Month, which is the month of May. WWA led the way for 11 other professional organisations, created all the supporting marketing collateral and co-ordinated and mailed all supporting materials to all host locations - all with no fees attached to being part of the WLSL Event. This event was created to educate consumers of the importance of swimming lessons and how learning to swim saves lives and prevents accidental drownings. This event received considerable support from host location facilities from all over the world. Besides the approximately 10,000 kids and families impacted by the event in person, another 1 to 2 million people were reached by media coverage of the events. ■ Be Water Aware PSA programme. WWA worked with

former Olympic athletes Amanda Beard, Janet Evans, Rowdy Gaines, Jason Lezak and Mark Spitz to film public service announcements with strong messaging about life vests, parental supervision, swim lessons and much more in order to give park members something meaningful to use in their communities to build water safety awareness. In addition, the association, with input from the WWA Marketing Committee, created the Be Water Aware Member Kit that includes all the PSAs, posters, window clings and more for parks to use to disseminate the information in the kit. The cost of the kits was kept at a minimum to make them affordable to all member facilities. This is just a brief list of programmes that the WWA is

proud to offer its members. Visit Waterparks.org to learn more about the WWA’s membership programmes and industry initiatives. One of the WWA’s strengths is its strong, tactical

partnership with members. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers who serve on committees or task groups, the WWA has the opportunity to hear directly from members what they need and what more the association can do to serve them and the industry. Whatever challenges 2011 and beyond may bring, the World Waterpark Association is well- positioned to be the educational resource for all who work in the water leisure industry.
