New integrated resort planned for Cambodia

ASIA

AS consumers on the Chinese mainland flock in their droves to the gambling havens that continue to prosper across the country’s regulatory borders in Macau, Laos and Vietnam, one Asia-based real estate developer has announced plans to build a US$400m integrated resort in Cambodia. South Korea’s Intercity Group

plans to start construction in October on a new resort complex near one of Cambodia’s primary tourist draws - the Angkor Wat temple complex, located in Siem Reap Province in the north west of the country. According to Intercity vice-

Angkor Wat

president James Cho, the as-yet- unnamed development - which holds an investment value equivalent to about four per cent of Cambodia’s gross domestic product - will include a casino, a waterpark,

hotels, shopping and convention centres and an 18-hole golf course. In addition to attracting an increasingly affluent Chinese

population base, Cho said the mega-resort was also geared towards bringing in wealthy visitors from other Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

Visitors to Tokyo Disney parks hit 500 million

THE total number of visitors to Disney’s two theme parks on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, hit 500 million in August. Megumi Soma, a 38-year-old housewife who went

through the entrance gate of Disneyland on Friday, August 27, was the lucky 500 millionth visitor. She was showered with several commemorative gifts, including a five-year passport valid for both parks and a hotel voucher for five nights at the Disney Ambassador Hotel. Tokyo Disneyland opened in April 1983 as the first Disney

theme park outside the US. The number of visitors reached 100 million in 1991 and 200 million in 1997. The nautical- themed Tokyo DisneySea opened next to the original resort in September 2001, and the combined number of visitors to both parks reached 300 million in 2002 and 400 million in 2006. Developers plan new India theme park

A NEW amusement park may soon be developed along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in India. The expressway -

India’s first six-lane concrete, high-speed thoroughfare - spans a distance of 93km, connecting the sprawling metropolises of Mumbai and Pune. Now, in an effort to

capture the leisure spend of India’s increasingly affluent

population

base, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation is planning a commercial development of nearly 1,000 acres of land that runs parallel to the expressway. Plans call for a theme park, high-end restaurants,

boutiques and residential projects by some of the country’s top brands. “The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the most productive

corridor in Mumbai,” said MSRDC joint-vice chairman and managing director Sonia Sethi. “In September we will come out with a comprehensive policy to plan the development of the 1,000-acre land we hold here.” Elsewhere, a large visitor attraction celebrating all things

Bollywood - the informal term popularly used for the Hindi- language film industry that began in India as early as the 1930s - has opened in Gurgaon, in the country’s northern state of Haryana. The six-acre Kingdom of Dreams development mixes live

entertainment and shows with cinematic exhibitions, art, culture and cuisine.
