Safety first for Park Games As a major player in the outdoor play structures sector, Park Games is at the forefront of product safety initiatives

FOLLOWING its formation in 1995 as a manufacturer of children’s play equipment and outdoor fitness products with a humble staff of 10, Park Games Equipment has grown its workforce six-fold and now enjoys the title of one of Malaysia’s pre-eminent attractions companies. The company counts itself among the pioneers in Asia,

being accredited with the TUV EN1176 for international safety standards on play structures, as well as ISO:9001, which covers the full scope of design, development, manufacturing and installation of play structures and fitness equipment. “Our products can be found in most of the ASEAN

countries,” said Veronica Yap, group chief executive director, “and currently the Middle East is our best exporting market, with projects including family parks, club houses, shopping malls, international schools and nurseries.” Yap maintains that issues surrounding safety can never

be compromised. Indeed, safety forms one of the firm’s four core ideological pillars, along with play value, quality and aesthetics. “To achieve uniform safety, all of our new product

prototypes are tested according to the stringent EN1176 safety standard for play structures by TUV, the independent and renowned German testing body,” she stated. “And it is only after successful testing that product prototypes will be placed into our in-house manufacturing process. “Although it is a very heavy investment, Park Games owns

most of the necessary manufacturing processes in order to safeguard quality control. Our in-house manufacturing facilities include roto-moulded polyethylene for products such as slides and crawl tubes, etc, metal works fabrication, a six-bath galvanising system, a PU powder coating system and a plastisol coating system, as well as an assembly line for final visual checks, and detailed labelling and proper packing.” Yap added: “We also have a well documented ISO

quality manual to cover each process of product design and development, manufacturing processes and installation methods. The latest ISO

quality system is also to include 14000 for environment and waste management.” Park Games has a team of versatile designers and

engineers and one of the group’s most distinguished advantages is its ability to customise tailor-made solutions to suit clients’ specific requirements, whether this relates to issues of theming, site-specific challenges or catering to specialist consumer needs. Indeed, the company recently installed one of the first accessible play structures for the Oman School for Children with Special Needs. With a rich history on the front line of the out-of-home

attractions industry, Yap has noted a “substantial evolution” in the play structures sector, not only in terms of product concepts but also in the materials used. “Stock phrases such as ‘good but expensive’ or ‘cheap but

non-durable’ are a thing of the past,” she stated. “Consumers nowadays are increasingly sophisticated. Besides originality, they want play structures that are environmentally friendly, educational, interactive, physically challenging, safe, durable and yet cost effective. “More recent new inventions include rope structures that

promote motor and mind mapping skills, while at the same time the unique futuristic features blend in well with most theme parks, be they jungle-themed, castle-themed, space- themed and so forth.” Park Games remains dedicated to supplying park, FEC

and related attractions operators with attractive, interactive, durable and safe play equipment and with a client list that includes Genting, KFC, Aeon Company and Adhari Park, the group looks set to grow long into the future. “At Park Games, we always strive to maintain design

originality, while at the same time adhering to our customer’s identity,” Yap said. “Regardless of whether it is a mega-size amusement/theme park or a smaller family entertainment centre, a well-designed and executed play structure will no doubt add extra value for its owner and bring ever-lasting memories to the users and visitors for many years to come.”
