RETAILBIZ: SHAUN WHITE SKATEBOARDING MCV 08/10/10 61

the Summer and Winter X Games in two different extreme sports – skateboarding and snowboarding. Shaun White’s success can also be attributed in part to skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. As a child White quickly rose through the skating ranks, catching the attention of Hawk, who mentored him until he turned pro at 17.

SKATEY SENSE

The game includes a story-based single- player mode in a world that is devoid of emotion and colour. As the user skates around and complete challenges, new life is breathed into the environment and players can perform tricks that wouldn’t usually be achievable. The central ‘shaping’ gameplay mechanic allows these magical manoeuvres. Objects with green tails

can be ‘shaped’ or bridged to other objects, such as grind rails, benches and buildings. The game contains plenty of automatic shaping but experienced players are able to create their own manual shapes too.

Players can stretch and twist handrails to new, seemingly impossible heights, while empty fountains can create bowls and streets can even transform into giant ramps. The game rewards players’ creativity with points that can be used to unlock new skateboarding gear and fresh new ‘opportunities’ that can be picked up. There are more than 80 tricks to master – from the simple ollie to advanced 720-degree spins – all hand- picked by Shaun White himself. His own custom move ‘The Armadillo’ even makes an appearance.

But it’s not all for the hardcore – Ubisoft is providing an accessible gameplay system that opens the title up to casual players too. Users can partake in the single-player mode or go online and challenge friends in co-op and head- to-head modes, starting off with simple skills and working their way up.

ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT Although Shaun White isn’t a playable skater, gamers are able to customise their own extreme sports character and make him a hero. With plenty of customisable features including goofy hats, tattoos and chequered shirts, along with the game’s unique shaping mode and Shaun White star, Ubisoft clearly aims to capture the hearts of skating gamers across the world this winter.

GOING GREEN

Ubisoft announced that it will no longer package printed instruction manuals with its boxed releases, instead providing players with digital in-game manuals. Shaun White Skateboarding is the

first title to be included in this initiative. Here’s what it’ll save the world each year:

 Two tons of wood from 13 trees

 A net energy of 28m British thermal units (the average home’s annual energy usage)

 Greenhouses gases of over 6,000lbs CO2

 Slightly more than 15,000 gallons of waste water

That’s some pretty gnarly energy saving, man.
