It’s a Win-Win: Saving on Ink, Increasing Customer Satisfaction

Segerdahl Group deploys FineEye ICEserver Litho ink optimization technology and gets more than it asked for

I

t’s always wise to save, acknowl- edges John Romita, VP of Opera- tions for Segerdahl Group in Wheel- ing, IL. Toward that end, he and prepress manager Tony Ferruzza have evaluated various ink optimization prod- ucts that promise 20-25% reductions in ink usage. The ink optimizer that ultimately caught their eye—ICEserver Litho from FineEye Color Solutions— works a bit differently. And it wasn’t the ink savings that did it. The Segerdahl Group is located in the heart of an area that includes many For- tune 500 corporations. On one campus, it operates three facilities with the largest,

at 280,000 sq. ft., housing nine heatset web presses and digital prepress capa- bilities. A 104,000 sq. ft. building offers sheetfed printing, high volume bind- ery and mailing services, while a third 100,000 sq. ft. property handles logistics. “When I first saw samples, I liked the

way the sheets looked,” says Romita. “It’s all about color quality, to match

the proof quicker, get a job on press and achieve that color very quickly. With ICEserver, you never see ‘rainbows’ and muddy neutrals that you otherwise find coming off the press.” Ferruzza concurs. “We’ve done calculations; we know we’re saving tons of ink. Check the

plates or compare progressive proofs with ICE’d and un-ICE’d files, and ink savings are very apparent. “Even better, is the way ICEserver pinpoints each item and area of a sheet, and compensates

as it brings back the black,” Ferruzza continues. “That’s what really sets this product apart. It works like GCR, but better; it takes unwanted color out. But the way it puts it back in black, only where needed, gives us more control.

No more rainbows For example, Segerdahl printed a catalog with lots of neutrals and back- grounds—like green, where red used to contaminate, says Ferruzza. “But ICE’d files take out the reds and the dirty colors. We don’t see mis-register ‘rainbows.’ That gives us ink savings and cleaner color. ICE opens up the backgrounds, giving us excellent prod- uct shape, form, and detail. In a jewelry catalog, the rubies are richer, the emer- alds are a deeper green; silver rings and the diamonds pop brilliantly.” Ferruzza and Romita aren’t the only

ones who notice upscale output. Cus- tomers are giving it a thumbs-up. “We just did a 72-page catalog, an annual project that ran about 500,000 copies a few years ago and now is up to 2.2 million,” says Ferruzza. “This year, we ICE’d the files. In the past, when the client came in, it was ‘tweak this, tweak that,’ and color OKs were an overnight affair. With ICE, the customer was in- and-out. We did not touch one plate, redo one curve, or make one color cor- rection throughout the job.”

Romita considers it a sales boost. “ICE is like a secret weapon that ben- efits them as well as us,” he says. “They see the differences and are impressed.” Both Romita and Ferruzza note that

with ICEserver Litho they can push the envelope and extend the color gamut, which can be a plus for many catalog customers. “ICE allows me to run up ink and stay within standards,” says Ferruzza. “I used to say you can’t con- trol what you can’t measure. Now I say ‘keep pushing the density’. Our custom- ers like the better look with more pop and we still save ink!”

services was looking to do its part in being a friend to the environment. The 12-employee shop had adopted a busi- ness challenge for itself: to ensure envi- ronmental respect of the chain of cus- tody for all paper products it used. The company developed a program to monitor and ensure its paper prod- ucts suppliers only deliver paper derived from forests certified by the Forest Stew- ardship Council (FSC) and the Sustain- able Forestry Initiative (SFI). SFI pro- gram participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage, and a product, process or service certi- fied by an FSC-accredited certification body complies with the applicable FSC- endorsed standard.

to be in every way a truly environmen- tally responsible business. Additionally, Bureau Veritas Certification utilized its ISO 14001 expertise to provide feed- back and pinpoint potential areas for improvement.

Spirit Graphics’ “Infinite Green” program has garnered a great deal of attention from current and prospective customers, as it is one of the only com- panies in its sector undertaking such a comprehensive effort

in respecting

the environment. Company practices and certifications delivered by Bureau Veritas Certification are communicated via an attractive and user friendly web- site. Thanks to the identified improve- ment areas, a more robust system has been developed, using methodologies that other printers might not have even thought of. Sales have increased, espe- cially to municipal agencies and large corporate clients. But, the main benefit is Spirit Graphics knows it is actively involved in ensuring the future of the world’s forests.
