Kodak Names Chris Lyons as Global Segment Director

C

hris Lyons (right), a well- known executive and pub- lisher in the graphic arts industry, has joined Kodak as

Global Segment Director. Kodak select- ed Lyons for his broad experience and expertise in virtually every key segment. Lyons’ position at Kodak was creat-

ed to oversee activity in the six primary segments of the graphic arts industry. Within these segments, he is respon- sible for maximizing investments in marketing, advertising, messaging, and online activity around the world. “The

segment approach to the

market makes a lot of sense today,” observed Lyons. “Printers and market- ers need a partner who understands the trends and challenges in each area— one who brings expertise and solutions that will help them succeed and grow their businesses.

I’m excited to be

with Kodak and to direct our activities in these various segments and ensure that we are serving the needs of our customers.”

He assumed his new role at Kodak in May 2010.

Sun Chemical’s Dispenser Program Reduces Ink Costs

C

ommercial printers can learn how to decrease their over- all ink spend by up to 46% through the Sun Chemical

Dispenser Program, demonstrated live at the Pitman Company booth (2611). Designed for commercial printers to manage what has typically resulted in an overabundance of spot color inventory

and to reduce the possibility of having the wrong spot color, the Sun Chemi- cal Dispenser Program can decrease a printer’s overall ink spend by up to 35% when blending the inks in-house and up to 46% if blended inks are purchased. Printers can receive the savings and a GFI dispensing unit along with color repeatability and accuracy, to within .001/lb, of their spot colors. The dispens- ing unit is provided to the printer at no cost by purchasing a minimum annual

Lower operating costs “In today’s challenging economic times, commercial printers are looking for ways to reduce their operating costs and we responded,” says Brian Brei- digan, VP Product Management Com- mercial Inks, North American Inks, Sun Chemical. “We recognized that many printers frequently end up with more spot color inks than they need that just sit on their shelves. So we offered an answer that not only allows printers to mix the exact amount of spot color they need, but saves them money. It also ensures the right spot color is mixed.” The Dispenser Program gives printers access to more than 100,000 colors through Sun Chemical’s Smart- Colour Global Shade Library. Printers with spectrophotometers can upload the spot color data obtained through the readings to a secure website for their color formula, or a sample can be mailed to the nearest local Sun Chemical loca- tion. They then receive the color formula they need to mix the spot color on-site. The program uses Sun Chemical Sun- Lit conventional commercial sheetfed bases with 20% strength in the dispens- ing unit. Printers will also have access to Sun Chemical’s SunLit 4-color pro- cess ink systems. The SunLit commer- cial sheetfed bases and inks offer ease of use on press and high print fidelity.

Prisco Exhibits Sustainable

Pressroom Innovations Printers can see firsthand how to reduce their environmental footprint

P

risco (Printers’ Service) is showcasing

complete solu-

tions for printers to reduce their environmental impact,

along with innovative new options for the recycling of fountain solutions and solvents in booth 417 at GRAPH EXPO. The company’s “Go Green with Prisco” initiative encompasses all of its sustainable technologies and its 100-years-plus of pressroom expertise. “Prisco has been the leader in pro- viding affordable products and systems that have minimized the impact on the environment since the introduction of the first commercially successful alco- hol-free fountain concentrates almost 35 years ago,” notes Eric A. Gutwillig, VP of Marketing at Prisco. “Our inno- vations are always designed to provide the most cost effective, productive and practical answers for print production.”

Reducing waste Prisco’s FloClear systems for foun- tain solution recycling, with FloClear technology, winner of the PIA/GATF Intertech Award, is a process for recy- cling fountain solutions at quality print- ing plants worldwide. Fountain solution life is extended and its clarity main-

tained for months of press operation. PriscoTech WaterMizer permits recy- cling and reuse of plate processor wash water that previously went down the drain. The system has the added ben- efits of allowing a plate processor to be installed without having to move drain lines and permits the use of “process water” to wash plates. PriscoTech SolveKlene II Solvent

Recycling Systems has allowed users to cut solvent consumption and reduce VOC emissions, waste hauling costs and overall operating costs. All these benefits are achieved while reducing their overall negative impact on the environment. Prisco is also showing its range of

low- and no-VOC fountain concen- trates, low-VOC solvents, ultra-low VOC aqueous coatings, energy-curable coatings and PREPAC products.
