Take a Stroll Down Education Main Street A ‘must stop’ destination for attendees seeking talented industry newcomers

ducation is one of the key forces to expanding the graph- ic arts industry. Printers and manufacturers say they need more well-educated students to hire. To address this challenge, GRAPH EXPO has designated a specialized section on the show floor as Education Main Street. Here, representatives from colleges, universities and educational organizations provide information on curriculum offerings, scholarships and students seeking internships. Attendees seeking talented industry newcomers to augment their company’s workforce should make this a ‘must stop’ destina- tion at the show.

Represented Colleges The Graphic Communication Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo offers programs in printing, publish- ing, packaging, computer graphics, design reproduction technology, Web and digital media, printing and imag- ing management, sustainability and lean manufacturing. The William A. Krueger School of Graphic Communication is located at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC. The school offers curriculum in print and electronic media from design to publishing.

Ferris State University’s Department of Printing and Imaging Technology Management in Big Rapids, MI, has built a reputation for preparing young adults for careers in the printing and imaging industry. Fox Valley Technical College located


in Appleton, WI, offers a technical diploma in package and label printing, and associate degrees in printing and publishing and package and label print- ing technician.


The Harper College Graphic Arts program in Palatine, IL, offers associ- ate degree options in creative design or print production as well as a variety of certificates in graphic arts, graphic arts design, graphic arts desktop publish- ing, graphic arts digital photography, fashion graphic arts, graphic arts vari- able data and graphic arts Web design. The Master of Arts in Graphic Com- munications Management and Tech- nology, offered by New York Univer- sity’s School of Continuing and Pro- fessional Studies (SCPS) in New York City, is designed for communications professionals seeking to move their careers forward. Pennsylvania College of Technol-


ogy in Williamsport, PA, offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Communications Tech- nology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Communications Management.


The Graphics and Imaging Tech- nologies Department at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS, prepares stu- dents for careers in the print and digital image industries. University of Wisconsin Stout’s Graphic Communications Manage- ment program in Menomonie, WI, cov- ers art and design, graphics software, business administration, technology, graphic arts and communications in its Bachelor of Science degree program.

The debut last evening of Scholarship Night, hosted by the Electronic Docu- ment Scholarship Foundation (EDSF), benefits EDSF scholarship programs. EDSF’s scholarship program enables students to receive the education neces- sary to pursue careers in the document management and graphic communica- tions industry, while providing assis- tance in offsetting the financial burden.


IGAEA The International Graphic Arts Edu-


cation Association (IGAEA) is an association of educators in partnership


with industry, dedicated to sharing theories, principles, techniques and processes relating to graphic com- munications and imaging technology.


The association equips educators with the skills and knowledge to effectively engage students in learning graphic communications.


GAERF Announces Student Design Competition Winners

workforce is waiting in the wings, based on the high-caliber entries received from students vying for the top prize in this year’s student design contest. Now the wait is over. The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) announced that the winners of the GAERF 2010 Student Design Com- petition, from among 137 entries, six winners were chosen—three at the secondary level and three at the post-secondary level.


e The Challenge


The contest challenged students to create marketing materials designed to promote GRAPH EXPO 2011— the largest and most innovative trade show and conference for the graph- ic communications industry in the Americas. The criteria included: cre- ating a theme for GRAPH EXPO 2011; designing artwork to support the theme; and using the artwork to produce a finished marketing product.

Technology,” as well as the artwork he designed, has been formally adopted by the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC) to promote next year’s show, which will take place September 11– 14, 2011.


The Prizes


First place winners and their instructors received a two-day all- inclusive paid trip to attend GRAPH EXPO 2010 in Chicago, IL. In addi- tion, today during GRAPH EXPO 2010’s Career Awareness Day they will be


presented with a $2,000


check. The second place winners will be awarded $1,500, and the third place winners will each receive $1,000.
