New Goss Sunday Presses Specialized Sunday 2000i web presses with digital inking will be installed for insert applications

uad/Graphics announced today, at the GRAPH EXPO tradeshow in Chicago, that it will install two new Goss Sunday web presses with DigiRail digi- tal inking specifically designed for the production of retail inserts. The com- pany also tapped Goss International (booth 1237) for enhancements for several Sunday presses and folders at facilities in the U.S., including installa- tion of award-winning Goss Zero-Slip Nip technology.

“This investment in an advanced press platform, including gapless blan- ket technology and digital inking, demonstrates an ongoing commitment to providing our customers in the free- standing insert sector with the highest level of print quality, speed and effi- ciency,” according to Tim Sands, vice President of Press Operations at Quad/ Graphics. “We are also taking advantage of Goss Lifetime Support enhancements to guarantee that even presses installed just a few years ago have the most up-to-date capabilities available,” Sands adds. Goss enhancements ordered along with the new presses will include the Zero-Slip Nip tech- nology for multiple existing fold- ers at Quad/Graphics facilities. Goss International earned the PIA/ GATF InterTech Award for the innovative folder development that includes proprietary microcellu- lar nip rollers that automatically accommodate changes in paper thickness and ribbon count. Zero-Slip Nip technology eliminates the need to adjust nip roller settings, reducing job change times and waste and allowing higher productivity.

Quad/Graphics currently operates more than 40 wide-format Goss Sunday presses at web offset production facili- ties throughout the United States. The company has also installed more than 150 Goss Pacesetter and Universalbinder finishing systems since 1980.

Cygnus Graphics Media and Quad/Graphics Produce the GRAPH EXPO Show Daily

By Karen Lowery Hall, Managing Editor, Quick Printing T

he transition from producing monthly publications to generat- ing a daily printed product is a new challenge for the Cygnus

Graphics Media staff. Luckily, the Quad/ Graphics’ team in Sussex, WI, which is printing the GRAPH EXPO Show Daily, is used to quick turn production. “We are taking our many years of experience producing weekly magazines under tight deadlines and applying it to an even tight- er overnight deadline,” says Gary Gramz, CSR for Quad/Graphics. “For the first time in history, the Show

Daily is available in a digital edition, which will go live on the Cygnus websites and graphexpo.com the same day the print version is finished,” says Kelley Holmes,

publisher of Quick Printing, Wide-Format Imaging, and Printing News, which make up the Cygnus Graphics Media group. “In addition, the headlines and links to the articles in each digital edition are pushed out to the Twitter subscribers and LinkedIn discussion groups for all three Cygnus publications,” Holmes points out.

Worth-a-Look products were selected from the more than 2,000 individual products being shown at GRAPH EXPO by just over 500 exhibitors. A product or technol- ogy achieves Must See ‘ems recognition as deemed compelling by a panel of industry experts for a large number of exhibition attendees. Products identified as compel- ling, but of importance to a more limited audience are recognized as Worth-a-Looks. Visit: www.mustseeems.com for Must See ‘ems and Worth-a-LOOKs.

To streamline the workflow, a portion of the information in the Show Daily was sent to Quad Graphics three days prior to the show's opening. In addition to this content, live coverage at the show is turned around in hours. On-site staff makes certain that attendees have the information they need about every aspect of GRAPH EXPO. “Once editorial and production have

finished with each day’s articles, they are sent on to the printing pros at Quad/Graphics. The careful matching of pages is critical. “For each day, there are five signatures: three 16s and two 8s,” explains John Van Lare, Quad/ Graphics finishing production manager. The three 16-page signatures were pre- printed for each day of GRAPH EXPO at the same time the full Sunday edition was printed. For the rest of the show, the two eight-page “live” signatures are printed and married with the pre-printed content for each day.

The live signatures are delivered into Quad/Graphics’ PDF-based workflow each evening by 5:00 p.m. “Someone can send in a page file and we can have it available for online proofing within 10 minutes,” Gramz notes. “We can plate the job within minutes after final approval is received.”

By 7:00 p.m., the pages go to a Harris M1000 web press equipped with QuadTech’s closed-loop Color Control System, and printed on NewPage Orion 60-pound coated gloss paper. The pre- printed signatures are then married to the live pages during the binding process on a Goss SP855 saddle stitcher. The pro- cess is completed when the sticky note is applied to the front cover with a Label- Aire 3115 applicator.

By 1:00 a.m., the publication is packed into cartons and whisked from Sussex 100 miles south to Chicago to be delivered to McCormick Place and your hotel room.
