Haneda ready for growth
Gate Gourmet is expanding its airline catering and supply chain capabilities at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to begin operations when a fourth runway and international flights start there in October. The company already operates a major
kitchen at Tokyo/Narita, where it more than doubled its capacity in 2009 after purchasing United’s catering facility. The company has leased a building sized for growth within minutes of Haneda. It has hot and cold kitchens, dishwashing equipment and bar handling capabilities, a warehouse and bonded stores. The new unit will be ready in time to accommodate several of Gate Gourmet’s worldwide customers planning to begin Haneda flights. Said gategroup ceo Guy Dubois: “Our decision to
open this second operation reflects the importance of Japan as part of our strategy to expand in the Asia-Pacific region into hubs with high growth prospects for long-haul traffic.” The company also has a facility at Hiroshima airport and the company’s Pourshins brand will open a bonded Asian distribution centre in October near Haneda and the Port of Tokyo, expanding Pourshins’ portfolio of managed warehouses beyond the United States and Europe for the first time.

Leisure Pass is a major attraction
A new agreement between Onboard Retail Solutions and the Leisure Pass Group has further extended the range of VIPs (virtual inventory products) that the company is able to offer its rail and airline customers. Leisure Passes are available for London, Paris
and Yorkshire, New York and Philadelphia. They are sold to passengers via hand-held EPOS devices provided by Onboard Retail Solutions alongside its comprehensive point of sale software and back office systems. Passengers buy passes from the crew onboard and these are then exchanged for detailed accompanying packs in the city they are visiting. The Paris Pass, for example, enables travellers to visit more than 60 top attractions, benefiting from discounts and offers. It includes free use of Paris public transport within zones 1-3, the hop-on/hop-off bus tour and the Paris Museum Pass. The London Pass similarly offers entry to 60 of the capital’s best charging tourist attractions, while the Yorkshire Pass gives access to some 75 of the UK’s crown jewel attractions. Passes are available for adults and children and vary from one day upwards, all offering significant savings off gate prices.

Mobile boarding option for American
American Airlines passengers flying from Heathrow can now select a mobile boarding pass option when checking in for flights online, receiving boarding passes electronically on their mobiles or smartphones. The technology, introduced domestically
by American in 2008 in partnership with the US Transportation Security Adminstration (TSA), is now being launched across the airline’s international network. Following the programme’s expansion, mobile boarding passes are now available to travellers departing on American Airlines and American Eagle flights from 42 airports. Customers who check in online and wish to print a paper boarding pass are still able to do so. At the end of the online check-in process, customers can choose how they would like to receive their boarding pass by electing to print the pass at that time, or use a self-service check-in machine to print at the airport. E-mail for Print is an option where the boarding pass is emailed for customers to print at their convenience, and lastly there is the mobile boarding pass option.
