Feature: Winning the Mercurys

Winning ways How winning a Mercurys Award has won business for three ITCA members

Monty’s Bakehouse Monty’s Bakehouse founder, Matt Crane, has a marketing background and after observing and helping a close friend build a successful chain of premium pie shops in Australia, he decided to see if the same was possible in the UK. He set up Monty’s Bakehouse in 2003 with the intention of improving the quality of food on the go. It was during his time at Safeway, buying and marketing fresh food and wines, that the low quality of food-to-go caught his attention. He

felt that at the time it was “largely tasteless, of low quality and, in many cases, not that healthy.” It was this that inspired him to create Monty’s Bakehouse, a name derived from a poster Matt saw through a train window for “The Full Monty - The Musical” and chosen for its timelessness and authoritative tone but also how it was “a little cheeky and challenging”

The Monty’s Bakehouse team Matt met Jacqui Davidson via their children who

attended the same school and they were brought together through their shared love of food and, even more so, watching other people enjoy food. Jacqui is now Innovation Director at Monty’s and between them they are forever working hard to understand their clients’ and the airline markets’ needs and use this to constantly bring new ideas to the market that have excited the sector and been met with approval by passengers. Together they gradually built up the business, finally gaining access to the airline market.
