New standards in Delhi

The new inflight catering facility being built by i+o for Oberoi Flight Services at Indira Gandhi International airport in Delhi is designed to set new standards of sustainability and energy efficiency, says i+o. The company is responsible for building design, sustainable in-house technology, and the entire building process. With a scheduled opening of February 2011, little more than six months have been allowed for the building phase. At the beginning of July Terminal 3 was opened. It is the world’s third-largest and will handle about 40 million passengers a year. The main challenge is the climatic conditions,

with summer temperatures easily exceeding 40 degrees C. The building material is from local stone quarries. On the roof of the main building, India’s largest photovoltaic facility will be built covering 4,000 sq m. The facility will not only produce a high percentage of electricity, but will also provide sun-protection to the main building. Hanging plants on the south side will provide shadow and cooling. A concrete wall on the west side of the building offers protection against the heat, saving it during the day and releasing it at night. A garden on top of the main building will grow local spices. The new facility comprises a production

building and a support building that houses a staff restaurant and administration. i+o has participated in more than 15 inflight catering projects worldwide, among them the LSG Sky Chefs facility in Frankfurt and Emirates Flight Catering’s new facility in Dubai, currently the world’s largest of its kind. www.io-consultants.com

Cocktails on the menu

In July Continental introduced speciality cocktails onboard. The airline partnered with Stirrings, the leading premium cocktail mixer brand, to offer its Mojito and Pomegranate Martini. The Mojito is a crisp cocktail with a sweet, smooth blend of mint, cane sugar and lime juice, served with Bacardi Light rum on ice for $9. The Pomegranate Martini is a refreshing cocktail with a sweet-tart blend of pomegranate, cane sugar and lemon juice, served with Skyy Vodka on ice for US$9. Stirrings cocktail mixers are made with all-natural ingredients such as real fruit juice, cane sugar and triple-filtered water, and are available to customers without alcohol for US$3. Continental also teamed with Red Bull to offer its energy drink to customers for US$3, or they may pair it with Skyy Vodka on ice for US$9. The drinks are available for sale in Economy on

flights to North American, Caribbean and Latin American destinations, using a credit or debit card in Continental’s cashless cabins. There is a discount of US$2 on alcoholic beverages when a Continental Airlines MasterCard from Chase is used. The speciality beverage menu is part of Continental’s initiative to offer customers more inflight choice. The airline also plans to introduce a variety of high quality, healthy food choices for purchase in Economy on many US/Canada and certain Latin American routes. Continental will continue to offer free snacks and unlimited non- alcoholic beverages, including premium blend Fresh Brew coffee, hot tea and a wide selection of soda and juices. www.continental.com

High speed rail for California

California, the top recipient of funds from President Obama’s high-speed rail programme, expects to issue a tender for a line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco by late 2011. The state expects bids from up to ten

manufacturers, and construction may start as early as the first half of 2012, said a spokesman for the California High Speed Rail Authority. The train will carry passengers the 430 miles between the two cities in less than two hours 40 minutes. California’s push for high-speed rail comes as it targets cuts in congestion and greenhouse gas emissions from cars and aircraft. In January the Obama administration awarded

$8 billion for high-speed rail projects. The state anticipates an 800-mile high-speed rail network running from San Francisco to San Diego, near the US-Mexico border. Total cost for the system will be more than $40 billion. California won a $2.3 billion federal grant to help build the high- speed link, which is due to enter service in 2020. There is also a $10 billion bond sale the state approved in 2008 to fund the rail line. The state has until September 2011 to

complete an environmental review. Trains currently operated by Amtrak do not run directly between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Travel between Los Angeles and neighbouring Oakland on Amtrak’s (www.amtrak.com) Coast Starlight line takes about 12 hours. The fastest train in the US is Amtrak’s 150 mph Acela Express, built by Alstom and Bombardier. www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov
