Virgin America extends contract
A contract extension with Virgin America announced in July sees LSG Sky Chefs continuing to work with the airline through 2013. LSG Sky Chefs has been supplying catering services to Virgin America since its launch in August 2007. It will also continue to manage the carrier’s equipment. As part of the agreement, LSG Sky Chefs will continue to provide menu and catering specifications, galley diagrams, and scheduling in Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Washington-Dulles, New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco. It will also provide services starting in August when Virgin America launches at Orlando. Its collaboration with LSG Sky Chefs has enabled Virgin America to capture a list of travel industry best-in-class awards, including Best Domestic Airline for Food in Travel + Leisure 2009.

Joint rail catering
Accor has sold Compagnie des Wagons-Lits’ onboard rail catering operations in France, Italy, Austria and Portugal to Newrest through a joint venture owned 60 per cent by Newrest and 40 per cent by Accor. Newrest and Compagnie des Wagons-Lits say
they have pooled their expertise to grow their businesses in onboard rail catering and facilities management. Newrest, operating in inflight catering, retail dining solutions and remote site management, says the joint venture represents an outstanding opportunity to expand in the onboard rail catering market and to enter new countries, including Austria and Italy. As part of Newrest, Compagnie des Wagons-Lits says its onboard rail catering business will be better equipped to win new contracts and position itself as a leader in railway foodservices.

Delta goes First
Delta has announced a major enhancement of its domestic schedule, with plans to make First service available on all domestic flights longer than 750 miles, or about two and a half hours of flight time. Delta says it already leads the industry in
availability of First seating, with 11 percent of domestic seats in First or Business. When the upgrade is complete, 50 routes that currently feature Delta Connection flights with only one class of service will be upgraded to two-cabin aircraft. All Delta Connection flights featuring a First cabin offer pre-departure drinks, a meal service using china and linen, and complimentary cocktails, beer and wine. Service may be operated by Delta Connection carriers Atlantic Southeast Airlines, Chautauqua, Comair, Compass Airlines, Freedom Airlines, Mesaba, Pinnacle Airlines, Shuttle America or SkyWest.
