20th Annual
Round Whidbey
The 20th annual Round Whidbey
race started with a bang at 0900 Saturday as the start cannon was fired for the Red Fleet aboard Byron Skubi's American Tug Mojo Workin off the Northwest tip of Whidbey Island. The Yellow fleet started five minutes later, and promptly began to thread their way through the Red Fleet. With a Northwest breeze, some skippers opted for spinnaker starts, and soon almost all the boats had hoisted their spinnakers and the sprint down the west side of the island was heating up (temperatures reached the mid 60's near the south end of the island which helped

as well). Several of the boats headed towards the east side of Admiralty Inlet, while others opted to stay in the middle or towards the Whidbey shore. There were several commercial vessels heading in and out of the south sound, and everyone navigated the area safely and avoided any incidents. Many boats continued to sail south
from Double Bluff before turning towards Possession Point and the halfway check point. The first boat got to the mark a little before 1800 and was kind enough to wait for the rest of the fleet to arrive by 1830. Every boat in the

fleet seemed to take their turn passing the rest of the fleet, only to be caught from behind again. Laughter could be heard across the water as crews entertained themselves by joking with those around them. Shortly, a little breeze filled in and the northbound race was on. Everyone scattered across the channel beating north into the building breeze that continued until well after sunset before fading out. It was an amazing night to be on the
water, there were millions of stars in the sky, flat water, very mild temperatures and it was very peaceful. We could have used just a bit more wind, but if you looked hard enough it could be found. Several of the boats realized and continued to make good progress. It was also a very frustrating night though as everyone took their turns making ground only to find themselves motionless while another group of boats quietly slipped by in their own little breeze. By sunrise the fleet was pretty spread out, with the first boat nearing the finish line, another pack of boats in chase and several boats reeling that group in. At 0630 Sunday, after 21-½ hours of
racing, Darrel Jensen, skipper of Alternate Reality (Sloop Tavern YC) received the Yellow Fleet gun when he was first to reach the finish line boat Spica (Charles Gordanier's American Tug). Darrel added one more Jensen family name to the perpetual trophy (along with his father Jerald Jensen) and it would appear he won the Round Whidbey trifecta – 1st in fleet, 1st over all, and he also won the family rivalry with brother Doug Jensen who flew in from Kansas to race aboard

Magic Juan, aka Juan-ita (Oak Harbor
Yacht Club), was the second boat to finish at 0940 and got the Red fleet gun to secure 1st place in his fleet (as well as the San Juan 24 Viking grudge match) and 2nd place overall. Fifteen of the 24 boats finished by the 1300 time limit, with several boats within site of the finish, but not quite able to reach it. To top off the weekend, many in the fleet were greeted by a frolicking grey whale at the finish who put on a spectacular show. It was a fabulous weekend to be on the water and it was obvious that a good time was had by all.
