be thrown out the window. Scott Milne and the Slouches had it figured out, taking the lead with three bullets, which I think in that fleet and that weather is amazing, though they did have weather guru Jim Barrett onboard. Pat Tooles sailed to a 4, 5 and 15th, while Keith sailed to a penalty, 2 and 3. Going into the last day the top three boats were racing amongst themselves. Though there were lots of smaller battles going on around the course for sure! Sunday dawned with the same
weather pattern as the previous couple days, winds from 7 or 8 knots to over 15 when a cell would come through. Again, sailing on a very unsettled southerly, the breeze was bouncing all over the place. The Argentines had a slim chance, if any of the top three would falter, and with these conditions, I would not bet against a large finish in any race…. I know we had some large numbers. Happens fast in these conditions, when you're leading to one side or the course and the breeze shifts to the west, current be damned you’re not going to come out of it very good. The Slouches couldn’t keep their three straight bullets going

starting with a 17, 3 Big Dogs fired the first shot with a bullet, Whittemore 2nd. In the end with the locals having a lot of preconceived ideas, such as myself, Pat Toole and his crew sailed in true So Cal conditions, playing the shifts and sailing super smart. With a couple of bullets and their worst race on Sunday, being a 5th, showed they deserved the North American Trophy, which I am sure they will have displayed right next to all the old long boards they have laying around. Keith Whittemore ended up six points behind, he and his team just could not muster the consistency of the Dogs, Scott Milne was 3rd. Other than the top two boats, the
point totals were amazing, this in itself showed not only how competitive this class is, but also showed that the weather was a large factor. In the end, 10 races for the NA’s and 14 races the prior weekend - I need a break on a larger, more cushy boat for Swiftsure!
