Viva Vern Velez!

Here is a group photo of the going away party held for

Vern Velez at CWB, April 24. As you know, Vern has been an essential member of the sailing community. He was the vanguard for CWB’s SailNOW! learn to sail program and a man of many regattas. I had the pleasure of knowing and working with him for the last 10 years. His words echo in my head “Everybody can learn to sail!” Vern is relocating to the beautiful island of his native Puerto Rico. If the weather and culture is not enough to entice, the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee has invited him to help build their sailing team performance. A sunny port awaits his arrival and we are going to miss him greatly! For over 26 years, Vern has been welcoming new and old sailors to The Center for Wooden Boats. With his passion por la viva and love of sailing, he has been influential in teaching thousands of sailing students and attracting dozens of new and experienced sailors to CWB’s instructor team. We have Vern to thank for the development of the award-winning SailNOW! sailing program, festive regattas, and his work as CWB front desk ambassador throughout the years.

A wonderful gathering for a wonderful man. He will be

greatly missed. Watch out for the Puerto Rican sailing team!

More Money for the Ballard Food Bank!

The Sloop Tavern YC just received a check from Flagship Maritime Training for the photos that Skip and Jan Anderson donated to this year’s Blakely Rock Benefit Race, and with that we’ve now made this year’s goal of collecting $10,000 in donations for the Ballard Food Bank! We would like to thank all the supporters of this year’s event for helping STYC reach this lofty goal during a year when the Ballard Food Bank really needed our help. Thanks!
