Swantown Marina Loans Kids Life Jackets for Free

Taking the kids for a boat ride is a

great way for families to enjoy Budd Inlet, but kids outgrow their life jackets quickly, and sometimes boaters don’t have the right-sized life jacket to keep younger guests safe. That’s where the Port of Olympia’s Swantown Marina can help. “We loan three or four life jackets

to kids per week during the season,” said Bruce Marshall, the Port’s Harbor Director. He added, “People in the community actually drop off their kids’ outgrown life jackets to add to our program.”

Swantown has offered the Kids Life

Jacket Loaner Program since 2008. A partnership with the national non-profit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, the program offers a way to easily borrow infant, child and youth-sized life jackets at no cost. To get a life jacket, boaters or parents go to the kiosk at the Swantown Marina launch ramp area on the Port Peninsula. They can sign out a life jacket for the day, afternoon or weekend. Once the family is finished enjoying the water, they return the jacket to the kiosk. It’s that simple. “Putting a child into an adult or over-

sized life jacket is dangerous because it can easily slip off in the water, going right up and over the child’s head,” said Alanna Keating, program manager for the BoatUS Foundation. For information about the local

program or to donate a life jacket, contact Swantown at (360) 528-8044.
