century Dutch design, but
the first genuine schooner was built in the American colonies at Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1713 by Andrew Robinson, following a morphing of the traditional square-rigged “heel- tappers” or Chebacco boats of New England. The name schooner came from a Scottish word “to schoon”, meaning to slip or glide over water like a flat stone, which is exactly how these magnificent boats appear to move over the water. Schooner Association’s (PNWSA) Windjammer Schooner Rendezvous was a big success judging by the enthusiasm of the schooner crews and visitors. Chris Wallace, president of the Windjammer Fleet said, “The PNWSA wants to make this an annual event so people in the South S ound can
