better on the Elliott Bay side, whereas adverse current and lighter air prevailed on the west shore. The parade route was set early by the large boats as the entire fleet proceeded under spinnaker close to the West Seattle shore. The breeze then became fickle and soft with only patchy wind to hop-scotch to Three Tree Point. The wind remained soft to Pt Robinson and surprisingly nice down the east side of Vashon. The dreaded south end of the island known as the “parking lot” even had a light southeast breeze, making that part of the course an easy transit. Colvos Passage lived up to its
reputation as a better place for predicted log racing than sailboat racing and offered a nice little convergence zone part
way up the channel that turned the fleet inside out. In time, the northerly filled in and the fleet was off again. At the top of Colvos the fleet found little to no wind across the Sound as a thunder cloud over the Olympics had sucked-up what was left of the northerly. Several of the front runners found the last remaining bits of breeze along Elliott Bay and skirted the growing hole to make it back into Shilshole Bay and finish. Those in the middle and tail end of the fleet had to suffer with the dying breeze. Once again this year's Vashon Island
Race had lot's of challenging re-starts, with lots of opportunities for everyone to lead the race at different times. Congrats to all the winners!
