•
• Conduct ongoing usability tesng throughout the design and development process,
including tesng on real devices, not just emulators
• Make sure forms are easy to use and that navigaon between fields is predictable;
The less text input, the beer
• Provide clear methods for the user to recover from errors, broken links and other
problems, parcularly if the device does not have a simple back buon
•
Avoid complex interacon paerns that require close user aenon for long periods of
me
• Use highly structured workflows or wizards for infrequent tasks
• Provide clear feedback on progress and the status of task compleon
• Use high contrast text color and select typefaces for maximum readability
• Carefully and consistently use color throughout the design; and use simple navigaon
structures that focus on one specific task at a me

Why do I need to build an applicaon when I have a mobile internet site?
The mobile internet is not a complete soluon and has some limitaons when compared to
mobile applicaons. These limitaons are parcularly important in light of the fact that the cost
of accessing mobile networks to download data over the mobile web when travelling in a foreign
country is prohibively expensive. Even if your mobile website has exceponal funconality, is
highly useable and your customers love it, it may not be used if the customer knows they will return
home to a large phone bill for accessing your mobile website overseas. With this in mind, there is a
clear case for mobile applicaons to ensure that you can stay in constant communicaon with your
footloose customers via a branded applicaon while they are travelling.
Mobile applicaons have the following advantages in comparison to the mobile web when deployed
in appropriate circumstances:
• For most apps there is a far more limited need (if at all, depending on the app) for a mobile
internet connecon. The applicaon is accessible anyme and anywhere once it is installed
on the phone and only needs to send and receive data over the mobile network when it
updates content, does a flight search, uses a locaon based service etc associated with the
applicaon.
