The mobile applica�ons development landscape
The mobile applica�ons landscape at first glance can be daun�ng. Beyond the iPhone, there are
a large number of other mobile pla�orms that offer the ability to develop applica�ons. To pin it
down, the vast majority of the mobile applica�ons development landscape can be pared down to
the following key pla�orms/opera�ng systems. Depending on the device profiles of your users, if
you were to develop a given travel applica�on for higher-end devices on each of these pla�orms
you would cover a large percentage of your mobile users.
Mobile Pla�orms Landscape for applica�on development
Apple iPhone OS X 10.5 – The opera�ng system for development of iPhone applica�ons, a
closed system (i.e. not open source)
Windows Mobile – The opera�ng system and closed system app development framework for
all devices running windows mobile
RIM Blackberry OS – The opera�ng system and closed system (not open source) applica�on
development framework that allows development of apps for blackberry
Symbian – An opera�ng system and applica�on development framework led by Nokia that is
in the process of being open-sourced
Android – Google led, complete open source mobile opera�ng system and applica�on
development pla�orm (first Android phone was HTC G1
BREW – Mobile Applica�on development pla�orm by Qualcomm
Palm webOS – The newest version has been developed for new genera�on palm devices.
Uses Mojo app development framework.
Flash Lite – The mobile version of the Adobe Flash player, can develop for all devices that
support flash lite
Java ME – The most ubiquitous Applica�on pla�orm for mobile devices (is now open source)
