and to buy items from vending machines. The move towards NFC involves a complex ecosystem of
players including mobile network operators, device manufacturers, credit card companies, banks
and so on. Many players are banking on NFC as being the future of payments and a very large step
towards becoming a cashless society. NFC itself is a contactless smart-card technology that allows
secured short-range wireless connecvity. NFC is compable with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For detailed
informaon about how the move to a cashless, mobile payment world is occurring, a great place to
start is the GSMA pay-buy-mobile iniave. Follow this link to get there.
Going into more depth on securing the transacon
Geng mobile security right, geng consumers to buy-in to the idea that the mobile security
is right and at least as good as eCommerce, is a crucial enabling factor for mCommerce.
With mobile, given the amount of confidenal and personal informaon they contain it is
necessary to be proacve and transparent with respect to the security measures that are
built up around any mCommerce funconality.
In addion to username/password security via mobile, companies such as Verisign have
begun to offer more advanced mCommerce security through combining: ‘Something you
know (username/password) with something you have (the one me PIN).’ This is known
as two-factor authencaon which enhances security and is a way to ensure that your
customers will buy in to your mCommerce offerings and feel comfortable using them.
It is understandable that consumers may be concerned about using their mobiles for payment
but they key is to ensure that the mCommerce offering does not require them to enter or
speak their credit card details and combine this with strong back end authencaon and
identy protecon systems. Furthermore, the use of two factor authencaon systems used
by many consumers to access their online banking has helped to educate them and socialise
them to this type of system.
This enhanced security system that does not require SSL security cerficates is now available
on over 90 device types. These enhanced mCommerce security offerings are however not
yet available through all mobile operators. Another advanced authencaon soluon is
provided by a Norwegian company called enCap which turns one’s mobile into a security
soluon (source: Encap).
