Glaucoma Risk by 66% Nicotinamide can help protect against the disease. ::
Vitamin B3 May Cut BY LYNN C. ALLISON V
itamin b3 may dramatically reduce the risk of glaucoma in people at high risk for the disease,
according to new research. The findings offer hope for a condition that affects an estimated 4.22 million Americans and is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Glaucoma has no cure, but early
diagnosis and treatment can slow or prevent vision loss. Researchers have been investigating
whether nutrients — including omega- 3 fatty acids, dietary nitrates, vitamins B and C, and a form of vitamin B3 called nicotinamide — can help protect
against the disease. Now, a study published in JAMA
Ophthalmology suggests nicotinamide may significantly lower the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common form of the disease, in people with ocular hypertension or elevated pressure inside the eye, a major glaucoma risk factor. Researchers analyzed data
from nearly 2,900 people with ocular hypertension who had not been diagnosed with glaucoma. About half received nicotinamide supplementation, while the rest did not. After an average follow-
up of 3.7 years, researchers found that people who took nicotinamide had a 66% lower risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma. They also were 43% less likely to need prescription glaucoma medications and 62% less likely to require laser surgery. Despite the promising findings,
experts caution that high doses of nicotinamide should not be taken without medical supervision. The American Academy of
Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society issued a joint statement in March warning that taking more than 3 grams of nicotinamide daily may cause liver damage. Dr. Benjamin
Bert, a board-certified ophthalmologist in Fountain Valley, California, agrees
that people should consult their healthcare provider before taking high-dose supplements.
