DSA’s Radical Roots Lead Straight Back to
Havana
Leaders received training from Cuban secret police. By John Rossomando
state department report on Cuba recently highlighted democratic socialist links to radical networks that Ha- vana fostered during the Cold War.
The DSA’s connections to former Soviet
political and intelligence officials extended well beyond Cuba itself. The report describes the DSA as “a par-
ticularly potent illustration of the ideo- logical victory of Cuba’s effort to posi- tion itself as the spiritual capital of Third Worldist radicalism.”
While the DSA was not founded as a
Cuban intelligence or influence front, it has built closer ties with the Cuban regime since 2022. Leaders from older socialist and radical
movements that received Cuban support have gravitated into the DSA, viewing it as an effective vehicle for advancing a Marxist- oriented agenda. Weather Underground leaders Bill Ayers
and Mark Rudd have participated in DSA chapter activities across the United States. In a 2017 Facebook post, Rudd described
training for a New Mexico DSA chapter that used Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals as orientation material for new members.
