How to Destroy Civilization Without Help From Space Aliens
I
’ve been thinking about what I would do if I were from some alien culture deep
in the galaxy and wanted to take over the Earth. I know, that plot has appeared in scores of science fi ction movies and books. Not really original. Then I looked around at our
culture and, gosh darn, if there aren’t elements of a great story evolving naturally. In no order of importance, I
would break up the family unit. Historically the family unit has been the strength of a society with the elements of commitment and loyalty. Well now, let’s destroy that! How? Simple. Tell women that they don’t need a man because men are full of “toxic masculinity.” The follow up is, of course,
that children don’t need daddies either, as single motherhood is suffi cient. Oh, yes, and from there we convince women that kids don’t need mothers or fathers because institutionalized daycare is wonderful for children, even though they are not loved all day. Now we are getting somewhere!
Next step is to eradicate the marital covenant. If two people are barely connected and feel no real obligation, they will not feel protective of each other. Loose connections is what an invasion from beyond-the-galaxy types would appreciate. Let’s support “shacking up,”
babies out of wedlock with any number of uninvolved men, and multiple hook ups, where sex is a release and not a statement of love. This way some needs

are tentatively and briefl y met, without the worry that there will be any united front. Now that is a great start to
destroying human culture, but we’re not fi nished. Let’s develop a virtual world for kids — and even adults, but especially kids, because it is better to “get ‘em” early.
The less invested they are in real friendship, play, reading, volunteering, exploring, and so forth, the better to have them zoned out and not involved in the real world.
Give each child some device
wherein they spend their time focused on a tablet of some size . . . and play games and play games and play games. They can even have virtual relationships on their very own site with people they barely know, but can call “friends.” The less invested they are in
real friendship, play, reading, volunteering, exploring, and so forth, the better to have them zoned out and not involved in the real world. The real world is what will be constructed for them by the interstellar aliens, and they won’t even notice it happening. Let’s not stop there. Let’s make
mind-altering and real-world- disconnecting drugs legal, so
that the populace can be stoned, unaware, naturally content. Remove all motivation to grow and excel, and the populace will be easier to control. Now this is not original, I
know. There was a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode where crew members were given headsets to play an addictive video game. When playing, the person experienced so much joy and satisfaction that they just turned into their own little world. And there we had it; hundreds of people on the Starship totally disconnected from reality and each other. Easy takeover. One of my favorite movies is
Warm Bodies, ostensibly about zombies. It starts out with our “hero” walking around Los Angeles airport wondering what happened. He fi gures he’s dead, but doesn’t quite know what happened. He doesn’t remember his name and laments that he can’t connect with anybody because, well, they are all dead. He muses that there must have been a time when people connected. There is a ghost layover
showing LAX before the zombie apocalypse. What do we see? Everyone walking around not talking to each other — simply glued to their cellphones. Even without an invasion from outer space . . . this is all so sad.
