What Super Athletes Know About Omega-3s
And what they can do for you. ::

rofessional athletes chase every single competitive edge that
can help shave fractions of a second off their times, or provide that extra boost for the win. So they know a thing or two about squeezing every ounce of energy out of their cardiovascular systems. And what can they teach us?
COMPETITIVE EDGE That intense drive to win led to exciting new research published this year in Sports Medicine — Open. Researchers determined that an astounding 75% of competitive
New Role for Hyaluronic Acid
ou’ve no doubt heard of the benefits of hyaluronic acid for
reducing wrinkles. What you may not know is its beneficial cardiovascular role inside your body. Hyaluronic acid is found in your
blood vessels, where it enhances vascular elasticity. Research indicates that adding
hyaluronic acid as a supplement to your diet may aid cell health by reducing arterial stiffness — leading to improved circulation. It’s been studied for years for its role in lowering blood pressure and enhancing overall cardiovascular health. Just how beneficial is hyaluronic
acid? Research published in 2022 in the prestigious Frontiers online journal showed that hyaluronic acid is “an ideal therapeutic agent for the growth of new blood vessels.” — D.A.
athletes could benefit from
increasing
their intake of omega-3 oils. These healthy fats — from
purified fish oil — have long
been linked to heart-health benefits, particularly supporting healthy blood pressure and arterial function. More specifically, scientific
research has shown that omega- 3s — eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, or EPA and DHA — promote great cardiovascular health. The new research shows omega-3s
may be able to reduce exercise-related muscle soreness.
EVERYONE BENEFITS In fact, they’re so important to your body, they’re classified as essential nutrients. But you don’t have to be a superathlete to obtain benefits like these. “Omega-3 fatty acids prevent
blood clots, reduce triglycerides, and decrease the risk of developing hypertension and coronary artery disease,” says Dr. David Brownstein, a leading practitioner of holistic medicine and the author of Dr. David Brownstein’s Natural Way to Health newsletter. EPA and DHA are
a vital part of your cell membranes, building strong structural support, and they even aid the crucial messaging between cells.

ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Since you can’t produce the amounts of these omega-3s you need to survive and thrive, you need to get them from the foods you eat — or through quality supplementation. But there’s a catch when it comes
to adding more fish to your diet. “Farm-raised fish has been found
to be contaminated with PCBs and other chemicals,” Brownstein tells Newsmax of the dangerous polychlorinated biphenyls — a group of man-made chemicals consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and chlorine. These industrial chemicals are
toxic to human health and the environment, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. “Recently, the Environmental
Working Group purchased farm- raised salmon from 10 grocery stores across the United States,” Brownstein says, “and the scientists found that 70% of the samples they gathered were contaminated with PCBs at levels that raise serious health issues.” Brownstein also cautions that
some fish contain mercury at dangerous levels, which can lead to neurological and behavioral disorders.

It’s easy to add fish to your diet
to up your level of omega-3s in your body. But getting the 1,200 mg of omega-3s suggested by many health professionals can be problematic. Instead, Brownstein advises getting a healthy dose by way of a high-quality supplement. Choose wisely though, as all do not adhere to quality standards.
