To infinity… and beyond!
Well, to Shanghai Disneyland at least, where Disney Toy Story Land, the park’s seventh themed area, is set to open on April 26, 2018.
Major construction of
Disney Toy Story Land is close to completion, Disney reports, and will be followed by a preparation period including ride testing and adjustment and trial operations, in anticipation of the day when guests will officially be welcomed as ‘honorary toys’. Based on the Disney·Pixar film series, Disney Toy Story Land aims to make guests
feel as if they’ve been shrunk down to the size of their favorite Toy Story toys in ‘Andy’s backyard’ for laughter and fun in a colourful, immersive world. The land will feature three new attractions – Slinky Dog Spin, and RC Racer (both by Intamin), and Woody’s Round-Up, as well as a uniquely themed character greeting area (Meeting Post), and immersive shopping and dining experiences Al’s Toy Barn and Toy Box Café. The opening date of Disney Toy Story Land will also mark the second anniversary of the opening of the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone.
New Zamperla brand Z+ to launches products annually
At IAE 2017, the new branch of the Zamperla Group presented both a new virtual reality system (based on Oculus and applied to Zamperla’s very popular WindstarZ attraction) and the VR Box, an eight-seat roller coaster simulator with six axes of motion on suspended seats. Riders on two rows of four suspended seats wear Samsung VR Gear displaying real videos of roller coaster rides, shot with 360° cameras. Currently available are the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Thunderbolt at Luna Park in Coney Island, with the Mine Train at Ocean Park in Hong Kong available Spring 2018.
developed a line of custom merchandise, including plush and apparel, based on the series. Sally Corporation serves as creative producer on this endeavor, overseeing and driving the overall development, marketing and distribution of the ride. The storyline takes riders on a global underwater adventure with Splash, a yellowback fusilier fish, and his best friend Bubbles, a Mandarin dragonet.
Choose your own adventure
Patent pending attraction concept Ride and Realm, by experiential design company Holovis, uses real-time media such as proximity beacons, geofencing and WiFi triangulation to give park guests a ‘choose their own adventure’ experience. It begins with a media-based attraction that immerses guests into the heart of a story and uses on-board interactive technology to put the control in guest’s hands. As they leave the ride, guests download an app to extend the narrative into the park, solving puzzles and unlocking achievements, before returning to the starting point, where the experience in the dark ride will have evolved to reflect their progress. Peter Cliff, creative director at Holovis, explained: “Whatever you do within the ride
or across the park has a real-time impact into the adventure that unfolds before you. This is more than just gamification and non-linearity; this is letting people determine their own destiny whilst being at the heart of a multidimensional, compelling narrative.”
