Merlin opens Madame Tussauds, Delhi

M

erlin Entertainments has opened its latest Madame Tussauds attraction in the Connaught Place area of Delhi, the city’s

most frequently visited district. The new opening marks the 23rd edition of the world-famous attraction, and its first entry into India. Located in the Regal building, the attraction will

feature fifty figures of well-known individuals from India and around the world. The unveiling of the new site was celebrated by more than 300 VIPs, including government and tourism officials, celebrities and media.

John Jakobsen, chief new openings officer at Merlin Entertainments, said: “Madame Tussauds Delhi marks an exciting milestone in our Midway roll out in Asia, representing our first foray into India and building on the announcement earlier this year of plans to open ‘Dungeon’ and ‘Little BIG City’ attractions in China in 2018. Recent growth trends in domestic tourism in India present a great opportunity for Merlin and we are delighted to have brought this much-loved brand to Delhi.”

Consumer demand for leisure options in supermalls

A recent report by GlobalData has found that a mix of retail, food service and leisure options makes supermalls a much more attractive destination for consumers.

Supermalls have continued to

develop a more comprehensive leisure offer to appeal to a wider audience and meet consumer demand and expectations. Many of these supermalls have leisure-led extensions in development or in the pipeline – for

example, intu Lakeside in the southern United Kingdom, which is enhancing its proposition with a 175,000 square foot leisure extension anchored by a Nickelodeon entertainment centre. “Though supermalls appeal to a

broad range of shoppers, landlords must emphasise their advantages and incentivise consumers to visit more frequently as more than two thirds of shoppers visit just once every three months or less.”
