Thea Awards 2018 Benchmarking the best of the best in themed entertainment

From theme parks and live event spectaculars through to visitor centres and museums, the latest crop of Thea Awards recipients demonstrates the expansion of themed entertainment into all spheres of visitor attractions. Take a closer look at the projects which attracted the attention of the Thea Committee below

Launched by the TEA (Themed Entertainment Association) in 1994, the Thea Awards were created to bring recognition to achievement, talent and personal excellence within the themed entertainment industry. They have since become internationally recognized as a symbol of excellence.

Connected Immersion Theatre Sleep No More Shanghai (McKinnon Hotel, Shanghai, China), set in 1930s Shanghai, is a reimagination of 2011 Broadway hit Sleep No More, which allowed the audience to go where they wanted, when they wanted, as voyeurs in a creative, interactive, distributed performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Connected Immersion Theatre on a Limited Budget Wild West entertainment experience Ghost Town Alive! (Knott’s Berry Farm, CA, USA) engages thousands of guests per day in an interactive, role-playing attraction in which

32

guests participate in a multi-threaded story taking place in real time alongside period bandits, cowboys, horses, musicians and the town mayor.

Theme Park Area Development Pandora – The World of Avatar (Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando) is a tour de force of placemaking: designed and built to be about the people, environment, culture, animals, and beauty of the Na’vi world. It is celebrated for its unparalleled level of detail and immersive qualities, touching all senses.

Attraction Avatar Flight of Passage (Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Orlando) is a panoramic flying experience which allows guests to link to their avatars to ride on the back of a Banshee, achieving new heights of experiential storytelling in its adaptation of movie fiction into the park setting.

Immersive Attraction Suspenseful and haunting with twists and surprises aplenty, Derren Brown’s Ghost Train: Rise of the Demon (Thorpe Park Resort, England) is an exceptional application of story plus various old and new show techniques.

Brand Experience The interactive guided tour of Jameson Distillery Bow St. (Dublin, Ireland) uses state-of-the-art digital, taste, touch, smell, and actual hands-on participatory experiences to create a delightful and memorable brand experience.
