Virtual reality roller coaster The Great Lego Race engages riders in a Wacky Races-style road race against an array of vehicles – including a rocket-powered surfboard and a scooter fuelled by espresso – all, naturally, constructed from Lego bricks.

lthough many remain sceptical about the use of VR on roller coasters, the exciting concept behind the Great LEGO Race VR Roller Coaster can’t

be denied. Reminiscent of hugely popular racing video game Mario Kart, the ride animation features a colourful line-up of racers drawn from the ranks of the popular LEGO Minifi gure mystery assortments, including Trendsetter, Pharaoh, Surfer Girl, Wizard and Pirate Captain. These fi ve minifi gure competitors in The Great LEGO Race were chosen to represent the way kids play with LEGO toys, blending different time periods, themes and characters. During the ride, Bluetooth technology syncs the virtual visuals with the roller coaster’s twists, turns, drops and climbs. The ride’s queue will include monitors displaying side-

by-side images of the physical roller coaster track and the corresponding VR environment, and guests can choose to enjoy the ride with or without wearing a VR headset. Use of the headset is recommended for kids aged 6 and over with a minimum height of 42 inches, or 1.2m. In November, Legoland Malaysia Resort became the fi rst Legoland theme park in the world to launch The Great Lego

Race. Designed by Merlin Entertainment’s in-house attraction development division Merlin Magic Making, the Great Lego Race will replace an existing ‘Project X’ roller coaster. “The Great Lego Race was inspired by the way kids play

with Lego toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative director for Merlin Magic Making. “It’s a unique Lego adventure that lets kids enter an epic imaginary world made entirely from Lego bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun Lego characters.” “The target market is children aged 6-12,” Kurt Stocks,

general manager of Legoland Malaysia Resort, told assembled media at the ride’s preview event in November. “It’s a unique experience for someone that age. We did the testing and the positive feedback was overwhelming… Ultimately there’s no rules, and I think that’s what the kids are really going to love about this experience.” Legoland Florida Resort and Legoland Deutschland Resort will launch Lego VR coasters in 2018.
