Expansion continues inRIVIERA MAYA


A number of new projects launched in the Mexican Riviera Maya in 2017, and more are due to open this year in a clear expansion of the region’s tourist industry. But it’s not only Mexico that is beginning the year with surprises, there is news from Argentina as well… Astrid González Nariño reports


T


he Riviera Maya is one of the most important tourist areas of Mexico, extending along 86 miles on the northeast coast of the Yucatan peninsula, Quintana Roo


state. It has become the site of large theme parks and numerous hotels, strategically located to accommodate visitors attracted by the entertainment offer.


An archeological adventure Xcaret is an ecological theme park located in the Riviera Maya, 5km south of Playa del Carmen and 75km south of Cancun, in an area of great importance for the Mayan civilization – visitors can still see archaeological remains.


Cenotes (pictured above) are natural rock formations, a kind of deep caves bathed by the sea, which receive external light and look like impressive natural pools. They are a key attraction of the Riviera Maya.


52 It opened its doors in 1990, after discovering the enormous


cultural and historical potential of the area, as well as its privileged natural environment, which includes cenotes as well as several underground rivers and a great diversity of fauna and flora. Xcaret, which has an area of 80 hectares, subsidized the


research carried out by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico to reconstruct the vestiges of Mayan pyramids and buildings found in the area. These have now become part of the identity of the park. Simultaneously, conservation programs for the flora and fauna of the region were structured, mainly of the marine turtle, an endangered species. One of its main attractions is the trails, where the Mayan jungle and the culture of Mexico are showcased in more than 50 attractions. Amongst these is the World of Children, inaugurated in 2017, an area created for children from 0 to 12 years of age who can enjoy adventures with slides, suspension
