Picture the scene: It’s Florida at sunset. I’m hanging at a 45-degree angle, head downwards, 91 metres above the ground, strapped into a full body canvas harness. This is the Sky Coaster, Fun Spot Kissimee’s ultimate thrill ride, and the official initiation to the Park World team according to my flight partner, North American editor Paul Ruben.
“The release handle’s stuck!” said Paul. I was too busy hyperventilating to answer, but luckily it was a joke, and we merrily plummeted towards the ground.
You wouldn’t catch me up there,” said publication manager Jacqui when are safe back at sea level.
“You’re a braver man than I,” agreed publishing director Paul, and handed me a margarita. I just concentrated on making sure my knees didn’t collapse. After passing my initiation with ‘flying’ colours, I was free to enjoy my first IAAPA Attractions Expo – an exciting, rewarding and frankly pretty exhausting experience. I took full advantage of the opportunity to try out some of the profusion of motion-based VR attractions at the show, and the IAAPA Legends panel discussion on adapting IPs for parks and attractions provided a great insight into the thought processes of leading theme park designers who have worked with some of the world’s most popular IPs. You can read more on page 30.
