Suzanne Callander reports on the choses of twist wrap materials that are available today to help confectioners move to more environmentally-friendly options, in line with consumer demand.
T
here are a wide range of elements that confectionery producers need to consider today, when choosing a twist wrapping material for their products. They need
to consider the performance of the material on their packaging lines, the ability of the material to protect the product and yet be easily opened, the visual impact required to appeal to target consumers, and a more recent consideration, end-of-life options for the wrapper.
There can be no argument about the fact that the twist wrap sector has seen many
changes in the past few years, with almost all PVC materials being removed from the market. There has also been a switch away from polyester twistable film to more recycle-ready films such as polypropylene and polyethylene. However, according to Jonas Schmid, Marketing Manager at adapta, the biggest trend the organisation has identified is a move away from film to paper wrappers. “We offer a full range of paper wrapping solutions, including our newly developed novel coated papers which are certified repulpable in existing standard paper repulping mills replacing the non-recyclable wax coated papers,” said Jonas. “These new paper wrappers have been designed to run on twist

wrapping lines with better efficiencies than many of the traditional wrapping materials.” Because cost and production efficiency is always top of mind for confectionery manufacturers, any material changes do need to be carefully balanced. Change can never some at the expense of efficiency or production line productivity. adapa is working closely with a number of twist wrapping machine manufacturers to ensure that all of its new generation of twist wrap materials work at the highest wrap speeds.
