Hot and cold ways to save: • £48 per year by using the ‘eco’ mode for every laundry load

• £30 per year by always using the mode on the dishwasher

• £100 using a heat pump instead of a condenser dryer

• £60 per year by cooking in your microwave instead of a conventional convection oven

• £600 on replacements by descaling appliances

• £1,200 over the lifetime of a fridge freezer by choosing ‘C’-rating instead of ‘F’.

Know Watt’s What

AMDEA’s award-winning ‘Know Watt’s What’ consumer campaign reminds households to use the eco-friendly functions on their appliances correctly to save on their energy bills.

W

ith energy prices set to increase again this Autumn, AMDEA’s award-winning ‘Know Watt’s What’ consumer campaign continues to remind

households to use the money and carbon saving technology in their installed appliances correctly to save on home energy bills. Bearing in mind that 80 per cent of the emissions from most appliances occur during the ‘in-use’ phase, the allied carbon savings will also be massively important to achieving the UK’s climate targets. From water to carbon saving and avoiding food waste, ‘Know Watt’s What’ Autumn promotions will feature new hacks on simple ways to save, always underlining the benefits for household bills. All the traditional advice on savings will be updated in line with increasing energy tariffs, which are predicted to rise again in January. This includes the calculator for customers

replacing large appliances, showing how they can make long-term savings by buying as high on the rating scale as they can afford.

Life tag before price tag Energy bills will probably never return to the levels seen a few years back. For shoppers needing to replace a washing machine or fridge the advice is to buy the most efficient appliance they can afford. The calculator allows customers to compare running costs over the life of an appliance, at each rating on the energy label. The lifetime cost can now be as important as the purchase price.

More than a drop in the ocean Many households could cut their water use by nearly a quarter, plus slash the corresponding cost from their water heating bills, simply by using the technology in their installed appliances correctly.

The average personal daily water usage is

144 litres in England, and official targets aim to cut this to 122 litres by 2037. Just by pressing the ‘eco’ button on a dishwasher and washing machine, and taking a daily five-minute shower instead of a bath, many households could easily meet this goal.

How to save water: • Using ‘eco’ programmes for both dishes and laundry can save 15,000 litres a year compared to ordinary cycles, and an average £80 off the electricity bill, based on the 1 October 2024 tariff; • Taking a short shower instead of a bath uses 40 litres less each time. In fact, each shower taken instead of a bath is saving nearly 19p in energy – that’s £165 off the average home energy bill each year through less water being heated.

According to a YouGov survey conducted for AMDEA in early July, many people appear oblivious to the link between running costs and water usage in washing machines and dishwashers, for which heating water is the main cost.

Appliances for food waste rescue UK homes generated 6.4 million tonnes of food and drink waste in 2021-22, which equates to 95kg per person. The cost of buying food later thrown away has been estimated at £250 per person, or £1,000 per year for a family of four. A new section on ‘Know Watt’s What’ will highlight AMDEA’s TikTok videos; these feature dozens of quick and catchy ways to conserve food by better use of fridge and freezer storage. They also emphasise how small appliances can be used to deliciously make use of fruit and veg that might otherwise be consigned to the bin! Would you like to use AMDEA’s ‘Know Watt’s What’ assets?
