April 2019 A supplement to builders merchants journal

TRAILBLAZERS A word from the editor...

SOME OF OUR FIGURES seem to indicte that it

is a pretty good time to be a

builders merchant. Despite everything that has happened to the UK economy in the past three years - and specifically the effect this has had on confidence within the construction sector - merchants are still doing what they do best and reaping the rewards. As usual, we have our

league tables which delve into the financial figures and

show, not only how well the individual companies are doing, but also where they sit compared wth everyone else.

Travis Perkins are, unsurprisingly, still way out ahead, but the independents are very much holding their own.

When looking at these figures, the caveat is, of course, that we can only

use what figures we have available in the public domain at Companies House. Not everyone files at the same time or has the same year-end. What will be interesting in next year’s supplement will be the effect of the influx of outside capital on this market - much of it, but not all, from Cairngorm. Already, Rembrand Timber’s Trailblazers entry has made way for the far larger National Timber Group entry, of which Rembrand forms a part, since its acquisition last Summer. Cairngorm, of course, bought Parkers this time last year, and it was funds from Inflexion Private Equity Partners LLP that was behind Huws Gray’s surprise - or not - purchase of Ridgeons last Autumn. This promoted Huws Gray, already climbing steadily up the league tables, into the top five. The changes won’t stop there. Watch this space. Fiona Russell Horne Editor-in-Chief
