SHOW PREVIEW CASE STUDIES

FOLLOW IN THE FOOT STEPS OF THOUSANDS OF SUCCESSFUL FRANCHI SEES WHO HAVE S TARTED THEIR JOURNEY AT THE BRITI S H & INTERNATIONAL FRANCHI S E EXHIBITION.

M MATTHEW CAWTHORNE

After a successful career in the Royal Marines and managing security businesses in the Middle East, Matthew Cawthorne decided it was time to be his own boss.

atthew’s career with the marines had taken him to more than 60 countries

and, after early retirement in 2008, he spent nine years working in Iraq. In 2017, he and his family decided it was time for him to work and live in the UK. After 35 years of working for others,

Matthew wanted an alternative to employed roles on returning to the UK. It was an Iraqi friend’s interest in franchising that led Matthew to attend The British & International Franchise Exhibition in 2018. Matthew comments: “I went to

the exhibition on behalf of my friend, to gather information about franchising and to explore the different brands for him. It was at the event that I realised a franchise would be the ideal path for me to set up a business and generate an income – and to do it quickly.” Having met The Alternative Board

(TAB) at the event and continued discussions with them afterwards,

Matthew attended a discovery day at their head offi ce in Harrogate. His experience confi rmed to him that it was the right business for him. “From the very fi rst conversation

at the event, all the way through I found the approach of TAB to be transparent and genuine. I was very impressed with the team and their passion for helping the businesses they serve to thrive.” After completing a thorough

two-part training course, Matthew launched his franchise on 1 July 2018, becoming TAB’s local facilitator for the Three Rivers area, including Watford, Amersham and Gerrards Cross. “The support I have received from

TAB, and continue to benefi t from, is second to none. At my own pace, but with their advice when I need it, I am building a business that will serve me for years to come. On a personal level, I get immense satisfaction from bringing valuable learning moments to as many people as possible. It’s honestly marvellous – I feel reborn!”

T DUNCAN CAMERON

he business where Duncan was a sales manager had been sold to a US investment house and

Duncan was becoming disenchanted with the route it was taking, realising his role was probably vulnerable. Having had his interest in

franchising and the care sector piqued at a previous event, Duncan attended The British & International Franchise Exhibition in 2015. After visiting several stands, he attended the ‘Real Franchise Stories’ panel, where Right at Home’s owner in Sutton and Epsom, Tim Haigh, was telling his story. Duncan explains: “The exhibition

Duncan Cameron was a sales manager for a company in the medical sector when he was prompted to review his career options.

was an easy way to get to know the homecare sector and to assess the range of businesses operating within it. I spoke to a few providers to compare their offerings, but I found Tim’s story especially inspiring. “I was able to listen to someone who had done what I wanted to

do; he was two or three years in and doing really well – it was exactly what I wanted to hear.” In the weeks following the event,

Duncan continued his research and visited the Right at Home head offi ce in Preston. Duncan’s instincts about the security of his current job had been correct and voluntary redundancy provided the fi nance for a new business. In 2015, Duncan became the Right at Home franchisee for Havant & District, including Emsworth, Waterlooville and Hayling Island. He commenced trading in January 2016. He comments: “I fi nd being a

franchisee immensely rewarding. Not only do I love working with my team, I run a business that has a positive impact on the community, treating older people with dignity and respect and helping them to enjoy their independence in the comfort of their own home."
