HOME IMPROVEMENT
Lofty ambition
Lewis Perkins launched his More Than Loft Ladders franchise (South Midlands) six months ago and is already scaling the heights!
What did you do before franchising and what prompted the change? I worked in education and recruitment for around 7-8 years after graduating but, although I was able to earn a good living, I didn’t find it rewarding and looking back I regret not leaving sooner. I have always had an interest in home improvements and it’s great to now finish a job and feel like you have accomplished something for the day and made a difference to someone as a result of your hard work. It beats sitting in front of a computer all day, that’s for sure! I was looking for something in the home
improvement sector and became aware of loft storage and thought it was great idea – simple but hugely effective. Many people can no longer afford to upsize their home as the family grows so need to make the most of the space that they have, More Than Loft Ladders does just that!
“The moment you complete your first job is a great feeling!”
Describe the process of coming on board – how long did it take and what training and support is given? It was a very smooth process, I got in touch and received a very quick response, after a chat with Liam, the owner, I decided to visit their head office in between Derby and Nottingham – everyone was extremely welcoming and clearly know how to set up a business, since their passion to help other people do the same really shone through. I was keen to get going and MTLL switched up their processes to get me on board as quick as they could. From initial contact to carrying out my first job after my training, was around 10-12 weeks! The training was great, MTLL have a dedicated training rig at their head office where you can practice the trade before

going out on jobs with a member of staff from head office. Mixed in with the practical training where sessions on sales, marketing and MTLL’s internal systems.
How is business going so far? Great! In the first 10 weeks I’ve turned over £45k! I really enjoy meeting different people every day and making a difference to their lives. The only big challenge I have had so far is trying to fit it all in!
Any standout moments? The moment you complete your first job is a great feeling! Mine was a large undertaking, but very rewarding having the positive feedback from the customer. Since then, when you do the more technical jobs and do them to a high standard – it’s a great feeling.
Any advice for those considering running their own franchise? Go for it! Franchising is a great way to get into business with the safety net of someone who has done it before you
and made the mistakes. The home improvement sector continues to grow and as more and more modern houses are built with very little storage space in them this particular sector really will flourish. As for More Than Loft Ladders, it’s a family- owned and run brand – by people who care about their network.
What does the future hold? I’m planning to take on my first full-time installer so I can grow the business, I want to expand my territory as soon as I can to make the most of this opportunity.
Final thoughts? Don’t ponder it for too long and miss out on a great opportunity. As long as you are prepared to work hard, promote your business and put the hours in at the start, there’s no real reason why you can’t do as well – or even better – than I have over the last few months!
